SoCal Diego Baja Bugs... Any Interest?
Ok, this is the deal... I'm in the process of building an Dual Sport 181 Thing and hope to have it usable very soon. I am interested in doing dual sport events... ie driving to the trail head on the street and then doing the cross country off road thing from there. I've searched high and low for groups like this in the SoSoCal area and can only find one of any size and activity. Its called SoCal Baja Bugs. Great group with great runs and meetings, the problem lies in that they are a Los Angeles based group and just a tad bit far away for an after work get together!, Id like to basically do what they are doing only for us guys further south than they.
Is There any Interest in starting a SoCal Diego Baja Bug group?
At this point i am wanting to see if there is any interest in getting a greater San Diego / Imperial County based Group started? This is going the have to evolve into what ever it is going to be from scratch starting with this post.
Lets Get Started!
If your seriously interested in getting involved with a group like this, or will be in the future please speak up and at least let me know you are interested, make yourself known! This will have to be a word of mouth group if we are going to get it off the ground at all. I know for a fact that there are a lot of guys and gals that would love to join in if they only knew about us. So help get the word out by linking the site address anywhere you can.
Vehicles and Equipment...
At this point Im thinking anything based on the VW platform should be just fine. I really don't care if its a water cooled, Bug, Manx, or what ever as long as it is on and off road worthy. I believe that doing our best to insure the rigs are in good shape before hitting the trails will make the day a driving day and not a wrenching day. Things will always happen, they always do, but we owe it to the group too try to insure a good operational vehicle to start with.
Help with Vehicles...
With that said wrenching is obviously a big part of this game so don't be afraid to ask for advice. We all have had different experiences and most likely we can figure just about anything out in terms of fabrication or mechanics Etc. I'm open to opening my shop in the evenings for tech nights on occasion if it would help the group out. Lets just use this thread to see if there is any interest and if so we can expand our options. Ie a possible meet and greet and start some loose plans on runs and trips All questions and or other input would be greatly appreciated!
I think this is enough information at this point. If there is a marked interest we can start filling some of the blanks and dialing in the specifics of what we want to do and accomplish. Heck if the group ends up being two rigs I don't have a problem with that either! LOL Its all about having fun while herding the Bugs down the trail.
Thanks, Bob

I live in El Centro, but I'd be interested in local runs - especially if they are in my neighborhood.

Your back yard is the first place I think of. Do you by chance know Dave Wymore of Wymore Metal Fabrication there in El Centro? Great guy and good friend of mine. He got a VW tube frame buggy that he picked up last year and he is a wheeling fool! Maybe a few night runs might be in order before October? We can do a quick run up S2 to Diablo drop and run down through fish creek and out split mountain. Grab the r/r track road and snake through superstition back to the highway and call it a night? Or something like that! LOL

Weren't you up in Ramona? I typically do a run down Oriflame once a year or so. It might be kinda of cool to run down the hill that way and go as far as we want through Diablo or the Squeeze. Humm will we fit through the squeeze?Getrdone wrote:I'm game for some local runs etc.

I know Wymore Metal Fabrication but I don't personally know Dave (looks like I should get to know him).Metal Twister wrote:I live in El Centro, but I'd be interested in local runs - especially if they are in my neighborhood.

Your route sounds awesome. Though a section of the route reminded me of a night run I did last year. I took my wife out in my Baja Bug (she's not much of an outdoors kind of girl). We headed up the Choo Choo Road from Plaster City towards Split Mountain. About 5 miles from Split Mountain we hit about 500 yards of pure white silt (a lost gypsum load?) and it filled the cab causing instant white out conditions. My wife was screaming and I was laughing. I was wanting to keep moving (and not get stuck) and she wanted me to stop. Roof lights were useless.

OK stop right there.... First let me say I love the enthusiasm, the rallying of the troops, and the take the bull by the horns mentality to get some guys around you fired up to go out to the desert together. But we seem to be glassing over one really important "THING" here. The "THING" you have to understand is that you must lend merit to the "THING" you plan on taking on these said runs with these folks. I mean I am nowhere near San Diego, in fact I am 1300 miles north of there, but I do like to follow along and see pics of the runs that are organized by the guys that hang out here on STF. Also if i were to load my junk up and come down there to play with the SD gang...And I will do that at some point...I would really like to know what kind of equipment we will me running with. I'm just saying that I think the time has come to put a little pressure on "Metal Twister" to start a thread and post up some pics of his ride. The "Thing" is, around here we have a saying...."Pics or it didn't happen" So lets see it!Metal Twister wrote:Ok, this is the deal... Now back to your regularly scheduled programming

I'm having a hard time deciding just what your intention is here? Are you really concerned about the road worthiness of my newly acquired Thing? Are you requiring that some how my junk be worthy of your inspection? Is it to compare vehicles for ego centered reasons? Or do you just want to stare at my Thing? "You state, The "THING" you have to understand is that you must lend merit to the "THING" you plan on taking on these said runs with these folks."
When the time comes I will. promise
At this point the thread is not about our rides but about getting a group started. Id rather keep this thread on topic and not spin it off into a show and tell thread centered on visuals of our junk. If you are interested in seeing what I now have i posted up a few pics of the 181 along with many other project I have completed over the years on my Instagram. That account is under the name of "metaltwister". Or you can look here under the 181 Thing section ... http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... 2&t=145888 .
Being I am new here on the forum based on my post count I know and have worked with many of you over the years with racing projects and other off road endivers. Id rather move slowly and not make this thread all about "my junk". When that time comes I will post it up in the appropriate place here on the forum. Much like you have done your build thread... Very nice build by the way. You have done a great job on it and should be very proud of your accomplishment! Paint then your done right? Anyway Like yours, Mine is not ready for use yet but very soon it will be. When that happens I promise you will be sick of seeing pics of my thing here on the forum. Thanks for posting up. We will put you down as a "possible" at this point while hoping to win you over in the near future with a picture thread.
Oh and when your ready to come down I promise we will have a great time Froading! Maybe we could meet in the Mojave and play there for a weekend plus?

I would strongly suggest you get to know David. He is a stand up guy who loves off road of all types. He use to have a hook in the back of his Dodge diesel and would winch all the stolen dis-guarded vehicles out of our wheeling areas so we could keep them open for everybody. I got to know him through the rock crawling forum I used to have. We have had some great times together. Tell him Bob from Bengels Hot Rods says hi! His buggy is not street legal but Im sure he will be out there with us in the dirt sections.chuckput wrote:I know Wymore Metal Fabrication but I don't personally know Dave (looks like I should get to know him).Metal Twister wrote:I live in El Centro, but I'd be interested in local runs - especially if they are in my neighborhood.

Oh yeah... I know that 200 yd patch of silt very well! All I know is if your on a bike there are some really gnarly ruts under that powder... and the second thing is you don't want to be the second man going into it! NO WAY!

Easy there Bob, that was meant to jokingly encourage you to add a build thread to this forum and let us get to know you better. Not meant to challenge the off-road worthyness in any way, so sorry for the confusion. And really was not meant to derail your thread. Sorry about that as well. Written in the best tong and cheek but not taken that way. Again my apologies, hang around you find I am not an A-hole in that way just meant to encourage you to add to the forum any way you can.

Not even an issue... Often times these forum posts can be taken several different ways basically do to the lack of voice inflection or facial expression. Having had a few of my own forums over the years I tend to automatically lean more to the Moderator mode than the enthusiast mode. My Bad... Now that we have kissed and made up I am a bit embarrassed of the Thing I acquired in its current state. I'm a car builder by trade and did some barter work for this car. Everything done to it is what I would of eventually done but a bit differently than I would of done it. It was stripped down for paint but never painted. I thought while it was already stripped down it might be a good time to cage it, build a few more fuel tanks, I think I want to build some rock crawler style fenders then do the line-X interior and a desert camo exterior. WAIT>>> Now I'm Hijacking my own thread! Never mind I will start a build thread right now! Hear it is http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... 8&t=148674
