Rear ride height survey for new arm.

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Rear ride height survey for new arm.

Post by Getrdone »

Hey guys. Need some help to determine a universal camber setting for standard rear 3x3's. I have finished a 3x3 version for the DSBE Manx and moving on to standard VW torsion. One of the biggest complaints is positive camber in some arms. Although there was a brief manufacturing issue with latest rage arms, they have since fixed and match left to right. Most people who have camber issues now is due to the ride height not being what the arm was designed for. There is some play to an extent before the curve goes haywire. Too high a ride height will give a radical negative gain at full bump. Any pics of your car with 3x3's and the dimensions would be great.
I am looking for:
Center of stub axle to ground =
Center of torsion to ground =

A semi level pan would help.
Thanks guys. Here is a pic of the setup run.

Axle and stub to ground. Wouldn't tire height throw things off?

He is probably using the difference in torsion to stub axle to figure out how you have the ride height set and what size.

Knowing the stub axle height will tell him exactly how tall your tires are.

I've been meaning to measure mine, but it is so damn hot in the garage!

Correct. The difference between them gives me a reference angle from torsion center to stub, up and right angle back to torsion. Ranges usually between 3.5"- 5.5". The sheet metal is then modeled with the micro plates at zero camber and at said distance down. This compound angle is where the sheet metal gets tricky.

14.75 to center of stub, 18.5 to center of torsion bar. Hope this helps.

Mine is 14.75" to the center of the stub and 19" to the center of the torsion.

Doh, that's embarrassing. One drawback to iPhone is scrolling up and down and not mixing the posts.

Mine is 20 3/4 and 16 3/4 with my current tire set up. I should note though that mine are not 3x3. Not exactly sure what they are. I think 3x4 from the info I got from Mike when I bought the car. Hope that helps.

I should also note my arms are not 3x3 but are around 3 longer and 4.5 wider or so, home made.

14.75
17.75

3"

3x3 arms from latest rage that are about 8 years old. More positive camber than I would like but it handles ok.
