Our Off-Road Forum

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I know its kinda of off season as the desert is warming up but it might be good motivation to get the rides in shape enough to have a meet up once in awhile. I've searched high and low for a local group like that. I haven't found one yet? Ive started 4x4 groups, hot rod groups, and dual sport motorcycle groups and I sure wouldn't mind jumping in and doing a Socal Diego Baja Bug group...

I know there were a few Baja bug guys that are part of the San Diego Aircooled group but I don't think they really do much? Not sure though.

The problem with facebook and tapatalk if it promotes one line ~information free posts , possibly with a cool photo attached,.

I have tried to "get" the facebook thing and don't have time for that, I doubt anyone really does...
(checkout "germanlook.com" for how a "forum" works on facebook)

It seems sort of like a long lost love dumping on you in minute detail over coffee her entire life history as an escort/stripper /druggie and later recovery in Vegas...

Probably fascinating, probably the greatest (or worst) thing ever for those with ADHD, but for ME it suffers from just way, way too much information.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

That is too bad. There always have been lurkers that finally check, in post once or twice then stop. There have been others who's posts don't get answered much less facts given.

Opinions vs. facts can be hard to deal with; the differece can be a very fine line. I don't think we want STF to end up being like another site who can be hard on people for any of many reasons.

There was another interesting post about all of us knowing each other persoally and talking like that. I have gotten the impresson that some are good pals and may live close together but at the same time we have people particpating from all over the world much less the US. I have met a couple who post here; some live fairly close by and some farther away. There are some who live close by that, for one reason or another I have never met.

We have gone through slow times before and recovered, I hope this is another one of those recovering periods.

This is still one of the best VW sites on the web in my opinion. Thanks again Doc.

I came over here from TOS to cross post my build thread after being a lurker here for a while. I'd post whole PAGES of progress and of pics in that thread without anyone bothering to answer any of my questions posted there. I'd occasionally get replies, but usually they nothing to do with any of the questions I'd needed help with at the time. I just never really got a welcome feeling over there. I started to coming over here to post and have since received a lot more responses and interest in my rail project (which has been slow lately due to health reasons) on this website. I still post in the original thread over on TOS, but only because I know a few people there that I'd call friends.
Home made rail (street legal), 1600 DP, 34PICT-3, T3 brakes, 4-1 glass-pack exhaust, 31's in back and 7.00x15's up front. Link to build thread: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=147561&p=1227553#p1227553

Forums are wonderful for what they are. Cant get all twisted up about feelings on forums. If your thin skinned you might want to go slow and work your way into them. And you will most likely get out what you put in. If your a guy who never posts and no one ever heard of you... well? So start posting and quit reading everything. I signed up a few years ago looking for info on VW Things. Now that I have one and will start working on it regular like I'm sure you guys will get sick of me pretty quick like. On the positive side I've met what has turned out to be some of my best friends on forums much like this one. Like minded people, like minded issues, like minded results, for the most part. LOL I like this forum and as the season warms up, specially here in SO CAL the desert gets to hot to molest during the day. So everyone puts the dirt and sand toys away and gets back into the water sports... You know what I mean! Sorry but the beach and river is just a priority this time of year. The locals will get active again in September when they know that in October they better have everything in working order for desert season. It's all Good! Enjoy Your Forum while we still have the internet... LOL

I will add that if I hadn't found this forum I would never have been able to build my car the way it is, I looked at all the builds and gained from every one of them and without seeing all the awesome work here I would not have had any idea how to get to where I have gotten. Also for me I have meet and made quite a few friends from this forum and have gone on a number of great adventures that again I owe this forum for......So with out a doubt it is the best VW based forum for me.

^ This guy understands.

The reason I post here and not TOS is because the Excellence Density is high. There may not be the content quantity like TOS has, but I can ask a question here in the Transaxle forum and get direct answers and tips from real seasoned trans builders (Bruce, Pablo, etc.) and I can ask questions about brakes in the Offroad Forum and an actual guy who has actually raced the desert in sanctioned events with the actual components I'm asking about will tell me whether or not they'll work. (DustyMojave, that's you) If I have questions about fasteners I've got Ol'fogasaurus. Aside from that, the density of threads that contain REAL HIGH CLASS fabrication or ground breaking homebrew engine science is quite high. (FJcamper guy and the Scandinavian guy that blew up his Oxyboxer, etc.) That leads me to the next list, which is engine builders who are willing to give some of their magic away on here. The next powerplant for the rail buggy will be a Type 5, and I probably don't even have to say what site that's getting posted on.

I don't look at the numbers as far as site traffic and posts per day, but I can say I'm certainly satisfied.

I've been lurking this site for at least 5 years, probably much longer. Whenever I get the itch to build a bug, I find myself here. The body of knowledge already committed to these pages is immense, the body of knowledge carried by the mods and regular contributors is immeasurable.

Thanks to all of you that have made this forum what it is today.
