Project; subaru gearbox with reduction box to fit Syncro

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Project; subaru gearbox with reduction box to fit Syncro

Post by KarmannRocket »

Hi everyone.
Have started a VW Syncro conversion.
I am in the last part of fitting a reduction box to fit to a Subaru box.
My idea is that the Subaru gearbox is cheap and almost the same dimensions as a Syncro Box.
But it spins different direction and gearing is too tall for off-roading.
So my solution is a reduction box fitted to them.
I'm at the stage off putting the reduction together and mounting it.
That is 4 reduction boxes one for each axle, to my Syncro which has a Subaru motor fitted.
Also l sourced a Hi-Lo ratio 4.44 Gearbox for this project.
Hopefully next month my van will come into the workshop to be fitted.
Please respond with any interest
Thanks

I would also like to see a steering axle reduction unit, even just the raw parts.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

The original VW redux boxes cannot take very much power, at least you are spreading it around.
Sounds interesting.

There is also a reverse ring and pinion available for the Subaru trans that is well tested at this point.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Hi Guys
My van is still on the road as work vehicle at moment. So no pics until l get it on my hoist and haven't got machined shafts back yet.
Hey Dalek what's your experience with the VW reduction box. As for strength?
My machinist manufactures drag diff's, his telling me as by look of the size of these reduction gears they look strong.
My original thought was at hardening the gears.
