Chuck's Baja Build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Chuck's Baja Build

Post by chuckput »

Just joined the forum and I thought I'd post a few shots of my build. It is a fully caged '69 pan with a '67 body. Six inch wider front beam, 3 x 3 rear arms, and 091 trans. For motivation I came across a used Majors built Type IV at a good price. I shop the classifieds a lot for parts in trying to keep costs down.

Thanks for the welcome. I just updated my profile to include location. I am located just a little south of you  El Centro is located in the low desert of California on the Mexican border.

Nice looking baja you've got started there. Ive been through El Centro a time or two. I always though the farmland around that area was beautiful, its just too friggin hot there for my blood though.

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.

Believe me, I already know that. This is what my Baja Bug looked like about 4 years ago. . .

Need I say more?

Thanks for the kind welcome. I will do my best to keep y'all updated with pics as I go. As one of you noted, I live in El Centro where it is (I believe the word was) friggin' hot. We are enjoying some unusual monsoon weather right now, but our heat only hangs around until late October and won't return until May. The greatest thing about living here is the easy desert access

Hey Chuck,
I am building something similar. What brakes are those?
I ask because I am shopping for disc brakes for all 4 corners.

They are Jamar front and rear. I was going to run AC Industries discs front and rear (they're cheaper - and a lot heavier) but a buddy of mine was doing some spring cleaning in his garage and found a set of combo spindles in a pit box. He had forgotten where they came (and who they came from for that matter) and he gave them to me. Well, that necessitated going to a disc brake set up that would accommodate the larger front spindle. I shopped around and settled on the Jamars mainly for their lower cost (thanks Dan's Parts). Then one day I was perusing another web site's used parts section and came across a guy selling the matching rears. They showed very little wear and the price was right. I just had to have matching front and rear brakes don't you know.

On a side note, I still have the un-used set of AC Industries disc brakes (front and rear - no e-brake) if anyone might be interested. Check out So-Cal Imports for specs.
