Desert Gold?
It's a sad day. I stopped by the CAT dealer to pick up some Desert Gold grease and the parts guy told me that they stopped making it. There were, however, 40 tubes left in Idaho before I bought mine.
He also said that Permatex will be making all of their lubricants from now on. So, it looks like Permatex has added CAT to their monopoly. I just found out last week that Permatex had bought out LocTite, too.
So. If you swear by desert gold, it's time to stock up.

That's good news!! I wonder what my local guy was thinking? So is Permatex going to be making it?KBWAKESK8 wrote:I called Quinn Cat in socal and It is in stock and not discontinued but I will be buying some this week just to have.

Where can I order it online?
I don't always show my signature. But when I do, it's in this area.

Re: Desert Gold?
Dave, I can get you some if you need it either at our next meet up or by mail, just let me know. I haven't found a place to order it, yet.
I thought I would update... I picked up my desert gold today and grilled the guy about what he had said yesterday. He talked with a few people and searched his computer relentlessly because he saw that I was very concerned. Here is what he said...
Permatex is taking over their lubrication line and most of the products have a replacement part number. Desert Gold, however, doesn't have a replacement part number. He wasn't sure what that meant; either they will stop making it or they will still make it and supply it, but not through permatex.
He said they have 100 or so tubes in "the system" and this should be enough to last two years or more because it is a very low selling item.
I just know what I'm told.
Another thing I found out is that the CAT dealer has a full rack dedicated to loctite products. Every kind you could imagine, but the last place I thought to look.

Looks like I need to go visit my local Cat dealer. How much are you paying per tube?

Re: Desert Gold?
The only problem with the Desert Gold is I ended up wearing, couldn't seem to stop finding it here or there on me and it doesn't want to come off. I still have a few tubes left and it goes a long way. Thanks for the update though Tim..

Re: Desert Gold?
I've got about 8,000 miles over 3 years on my German 930s so I decided to service them while I'm partying with my rear brakes. The grease I had in them was a deadly 2-part mix of what? I don't exactly remember . But it's just like you describe, Leatherneck....by the time you see it somewhere it's already too late. It's on you somewhere and is not easy to get off. Dark grey/black and tacky! When I pulled everything apart I found the grease appeared to be stiff and all wedged out of the balls and cage area, no sign of any flow at all. Everything looked great once all cleaned off, so the grease did work...maybe I just waited too long to service them? I decided to try a synthetic grease this time (rated for High speed/High pressure/CV joints/etc)and some boots that cover the joints up better and hopefully don't spew grease everywhere anymore .

Re: Desert Gold?
John Deere sells some excellent extreme duty urea based greases...
Do a little research and you may never want to use anything else.
The OEMs haven't used anything else for CV joints in ages.
No dino//soap based grease will ever take 600F and keep working, or even remain grease.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

TurboBaja, let us know how that RTV works as a lube. I mean that new synthetic stuff.turbobaja wrote:I've got about 8,000 miles over 3 years on my German 930s so I decided to service them while I'm partying with my rear brakes. Older thread and it's gotten a bit off-topic, but how did the CV-2 work out for you? I had used that stuff on my former Sportsmboile and found it dripping it's way up and down the Baja. Seems to separate, get really fluid and drip when heated. No bueno.

I just bought some Desert Gold but I live in the desert.. Anyway I cleaned, and shot mine full of the good stuff and I'm thinking if I had of been lazy and let them be they would of been ok.. Only beef with Desert Gold is it fricken sticks to everything including the guy using it.DeMinimis wrote:Older thread and it's gotten a bit off-topic, but how did the CV-2 work out for you?
