Trailing arms question

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Tack welded the bearing carriers to the trailing arm end plates today. Made some more front spindle parts too. Tacked them together and just HAD to post pics.
Gonna need a grinectomy now. :D :D

Why didn't you go with 2" hollow spindles? As long as you are doing it...

I already have a kingpin front end with bearings and hubs, so I duplicated the stock axle shaft. Trying to save as much cash as reasonable and still achieve the desired results.

It's called a Kantwist clamp. I like them because they don't spin your parts around when you tighten them down.

Well, today I decided that the Bugpack trailing arm bushings that I bought 8 years ago, just don't fit my 1-1/2 I.D. tubing well enough, (for my liking). So, I'm ordering some MDS filled cast Nylon 6 to make my own out of. I'll turn this down to fit the 1-5/8" I.D. X 2-1/2" O.D. steel tubing I have. This, oversize, tubing should give me more surface area to attach my 1-1/4" trailing arm tubes to. Any opinions?

We use 1.5" ID material that fits the urethane bushings. We also weld a plate onto the pivot that allows for more room to weld on the tubes. You might consider just doing that.

I saw that, (plate), on your website and really like it. What's the o.d. of the tubing you use? I have 1-1/5" I.D. tubing, but it measures 1.525", and that seems kinda sloppy to me, (that's the machinist side of me talking).
I also have a strange pivot mount, already welded to my torsion housing. It has 1/2 of the bushing, (that the urethane bushing rides on), already attached to the mount. With this setup, I have to install the urethane bushing, (without, the inside steel collar), then the trailing arm with the other bushing, (and inside steel collar), already installed. This means that the urethane bushing is riding on the welded mount instead of the provided steel collar. Does this seem normal to anyone?

The pivot material is 2" .25wall DOM 1 7/8 long.

Excellent choice. Wish I had some of that lying around
Will post pics of parts as I make them as I'm olanning on working late, (on my own stuff), tomorrow afternoon. Torching out the current trans mounts this weekend and working out the mounting of the 091.
Stay tuned.....
