Making progress...

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Back on it's wheels again! Still tying up some loose ends and have to do the alignment still, but it will be back on the road before the weekend. The fit and quality of these Foddrill spindles are impressive. I switched from the 3" raised Tweeds to the standard height. Everyone is happy except for my wallet, which is still recovering from serious injury!! Hahaha!!

First test drive last night. Big improvement! Front end is definitely lower... I would say, about... 3"? Hahahaa! I found out I could eliminate a little more play in my steering column by welding a coupler I had between the bushings behind the steering wheel and the first u-joint. I originally wanted to be able to remove all the column pieces with out cutting. The slip joint (with a thru bolt) was flexing, adding play to the wheel without turning. Threw out that idea and welded it solid. I cranked up the preload on the springs another 1/2" to get back some of the ride height. I think I can go a bit more on the preload, but it is working well on the street. I am very anxious to get it on the dirt to see how it handles! I bought the 2 degree camber spindles. So the steering is very sensitive on the freeway. I put 1/8" toe in on the alignment, but I may back that out to neutral. Cornering stability is a big improvement, and it brakes like an arrow now. These spindles are very well made! Expensive? Yes, but the improvement over the Tweeds is worth it in my opinion. And I still need to test it in the dirt!

Good to hear Skid. I'm glad it is working a lot better. What part did you weld solid? I have wondered about taking the rubber disk between the steering column and steering box. Have you tried turning off the power steering and see if better on the Highway? It is dirt time, let us know how it goes.

Snow run this last Saturday! Went from Apple Valley up the back side of Big Bear. Car ended up a lot more muddier than this picture shows. The snow run off turned the roads to a slippery mess, but it was a ton of fun!

I have a first generation that I never use anymore. The video quality wasn't very good on the first ones compared to what they do now. Hit Shayne up for some footage, he was running his all day.
