Making progress...

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Sounds like you had a great day Steve. Good to hear you got the car out. Just curious, how are you liking the electric power steering?

I love it! One of the best upgrade decisions I have made on this car.

How much current does the power steering draw?

Max draw of 30 amps (if you are sitting still and turning the wheel lock to lock). Normal riving it doesn't draw much at all.

Can you describe how it feels, and how much power it has? Do you still get to feel all the trail details? If you hit a big bump with one wheel does it react against the force to keep steering wheel from bumping?

It eliminates almost all the bump steer. You can still feel the terrain. It just removes most of the force feedback when the wheels would normally be turned out of your grip. It greatly reduces hand and forearm fatigue. I can drive one handed through the rough stuff now, three fingered through most stuff. It was a huge improvement! Just in case, I wired mine through a cut off toggle switch on the dash - when turned off it drives exactly like it used to.

(cough! cough!) DAMN it's dusty in this thread!! I have been lurking a lot, and chime in every once in awhile... hadn't realized how long my build thread had gone quiet. The car is currently on jack stands, waiting for me to rebuild the rack & pinion, and the spindles.

Miss QRP as well, would be my guess! He has almost dropped off the off road world all together. Saw his motor home up for sale a little while ago. Last time I spoke with him he still owns the baja though.

His Baja, super cool swing axle, still remember it trying to go up the rocks on the way to Death Valley, 8) Good Times, we need to do it some more my friend.

Maybe we should plan another run over Mengel Pass this fall, after Death Valley cools off a bit...
