I ripped out my original white headliner the other day and I want to do what was done in the 69 that's pictured. However my car a 72 standard has clips on the door post, and along the upper doors edge on my car that the orignial headliner tied into.
The 69 pictured has grey commercial carpet from Pep Boys in the ceiling. The car was built as a Cal Look and looked terrific. I saw this car in this years Winter VW Jam in Daytona, but the second owner did not do the body work, so he was not sure about it having the clips. I don't know if the 69's had clips for the headliner, if they did they were removed from his car and smoothed over with body filler possibly, and that's most likely what I am going to do. Anyone do something like this?

Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.
I have already made up my mind. I am going this route, and I have the perfect piece of carpet. In my opinion it's a much cleaner look and you never have to worry about tearing your original headliner or keeping it clean. The key here is making sure you use the proper adhesive to hold you material in place. I had much rather be doing a little sanding to make ready for paint, than working overhead with padding, headliner bows, trimming and tucking here and there. You had to see Paul's car to really appreciate the look.
My standard model '67 has just the centre piece of headliner like the one you show. This was how they came from the factory (only with normal material ratehr than carpet).
Looks like they cut the tabs off the B piller and used a pinch weld molding (the same stuff used on the rear side windows when you have pop out windows) to finish off the seam. Above the door it looks like they cut the headliner tabs off (drill out the spot welds) and finish sanding for paint.
This would work good for an Off Road car like a Baja or class 11 look.
This AM I jumped inside the car were it was nice and hot, at least I was in the shade. I started removing the headliner clips on the door post and those above the door. Using some pliers I bent the tabs on the door post back and forth till they broke off clean. My flap disc removed the small edges that were left. On the top I was able to remove the strip by using a piece of wood I cut at a angle and placing it next to the clip and pulling against the wood with my channel locks snapping the strip from the spot welds. The strip came off nice and clean. Without the wood you will bend up the surface metal. The pressure against the wood distributes the forces over a larger area preventing the metal from caving in.
I will touch up the spot welds with the flap disc and be ready for a little surfacing compound, some sanding, then primer.

That is pretty clean looking.You could fill in the seams for a smoother look,I wonder if the carpet would stay glued to a layer of something like Dynamat Ultra sound deadner/insulation.
That would help keep it cooler and quieter inside.Yea,I think I like this idea,allows you to show off more paint work inside too.I have a 67 Export Model,I guess you could call it a Deluxe Model.It has the full headliner.

I spoke with the tech at Fatmat.com when ordering my roll, and using adhesive over the fatmat will hold coverings in place. However the cocoa mat carpet I am going to use in the top will be held in place with adhesive and most like glued push pins. I plan to use a 1" wide finished Mahogany bows across from one side to the other space proportionally. Should work out OK. That's my idea at this point As for filling in the seams, I thought about it, but believe me it's a lot of work just getting the areas where you removed the clip and filled and smoothed out where it looks perfect. I decided to not go that route and keep it with the look of seperation. Your choice if you want that look and all the hard work it would take.
