I'm road racing a 1973 type 3 Fastback. To add a little more fuel volume and to eliminate any chance of fuel starvation due to fuel slosh / cornering G's — I fabricated a 5 1/2" deep sump, (about 7" x 6" sq) added to the bottom of the stock tank, w/ some metal baffles added to the floor of the tank too.
Unfortunately I didn't take into account that the new set-up and baffles, would interfere with the reinstallation of the tube-type fuel sender unit. (The type with the aluminum tube that contains the float hanging on a centered rod INSIDE an aluminum tube, with the bare resistance wires running vertically inside the aluminum tube carrier.)
It now hits bottom 1/4" before the lid seats to the top of the tank.
Does anyone happen to know whether the other 'lever-arm' type of fuel sender, with the float on the end of a pivoting arm will work in place of this style of sender (they're both 5 bolt? I'm imagining that I could bend the more horizontal 'arm' that the float rides on — to keep it off the bottom?
Fuel Sender Swap?: Tube type to lever arm?

It would be easy enough to add a custom-made 1/4" spacer made of aluminum under the mount flange of the stock sender. Those senders are baffled and you get a better reading from the tube-type. That's what i would do.
Got any photos of the baffles you added??
Got any other photos of the car in your avatar?? I'm doing a similar thing with my Squareback.

Thanks Nate,
Good idea. I'll try and fab a spacer and see how well that works out.
I originally tried sectioning (shortening) a spare tube-type sender and that seemed to work out OK too.
I'm actually curious whether the lever/arm type would work as a back up — as they're cheap and plentiful.
There are a bunch of pics videos of our car here: http://www.gulpracing.tumblr.com/

The lever type works, fine, but 2 things have to be considered:
1. You need to run a vibrator to dampen the signal going to the gauge.
2. You have to find a sender that works on the same oHms scale as your gauge or it will be off. This is the most important thing really.
