VW Beetle engine to transaxle compatibility

Post by opla »

I have a 1968 VW Beetle with the transaxle intact, but no engine. I have an engine from a 1973 Super Beetle. Is this engine and transaxle compatible? If not what modifications are required to install the engine?

Welcome to the STF!!!

Other than the obvious dual port vs. single port changes, you will have to also swap the clutch pressure plate, as the throwout bearing design changed in `71. (Depends on if the 68 had a later trans swapped in at some point) The late pressure plate setup won't like the early TO bearing setup and vice versa. Broken parts and cussing will follow.

If the trans has a guide tube inside the throwout bearing retained to the trans with 3 bolts, it is a late style setup. There are other ways of fixing this... but you need to determine exactly what you have.

The 73 may also have an alternator. Maybe.

Note: this is the Type THREE forum, for fastbacks/squarebacks etc.
Bugs are type1s... Block and heads are more or less interchangeable for the most part (late and aftermarket blocks are "universal") but the cooling and intake setups are totally different than a bug.

You may want to repost on the STF Type1 forum if you have more questions, many more T1 folk to help there.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
