I believe the tranny of choice would be the earlier tailshift version for that type of conversion. Also, you're going to have to do a ring gear flip.

I'm going to repost this in The Type 3 Forum for a few more hits.

okay where do i get the ring gear. I got a side shift not much i can do but change the end of it to a tail shift. or just sell it and go with a bus trany. but I now i can add this trany, just that the ring gears is whats keeping me from dropin it in. how do i do a ring gear flip????

search the forums, especialy the transmission forum here. but i dont think you can flip the ring and pinion on that trans.

you can not flop the r/p on the 914 transmissions. you need a 901 5 speed out of a 911/915 and even that requires some 'out of sight' body mods to fit.

I think you might be incorrect....
there has been lots of talk on Germanlook.com about flipping the r/p on
a 914 tranny....

here's one thread in particular where someone was asking what shifter
to use with a 914 tranny and Yettibone talks about flipping the r/p

affirmative vujade.
You can flip the r/p pretty easily.

you can also use the bug@5speed nosecone to install it into t1/3

Thank you all.
Thanks for the link. That helped out alot,
but bye the look of things I may need stop rite now with the aircooled and get these gti's out of the way. but i will be trying to get this 914 5 speed in. I know it can be done with the rite info. two GTI's in the back yard and they both need motors. vr6 for 1 and maybe the aba 2.0 hybrid that i started before the vr came to play.
anybody got a 911 trans. that they dont need. could help me out alot. but if not it's on with the 914.

Making a cable shifter for a 914 sideshift might not be too bad either, a fellow who did a Subaru SVX 6 swap designed one, on the web somewhere, parts list and all posted.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
