i need a Dellorto specialists help
I have a single dellorto setup and once it warms up (oil temp around 165-185) she starts gradually missing and sputtering on acceleration , if i lightly throtle it it wont do it. I have a modified heated intake done so icing is definitely not an issue. I started the air mixture screw at 3 turns out then adjusted it in until it started to die down then went back out almost 5 turns it ran the best. I don’t have a syncrometer to set the bypass screw yet so i adjusted them at 1.25 turns out on both. I have swapped out dizzys, replaced plugs with Bosch, plug wires, timing adjusted, valves at .006 (all of them), no vacuum leaks. i have read the Dellorto book and tried to follow it but it gets a little confusing but if i read it right since its all talking about dual setup should i double what it says about jetting
I have a bone stock 1641 motor that is a fresh rebuild (less than 20 miles).
I am running a single Dellerto 36 with a pair of 28 venture, ( I think these might be to small)
main jet stack has tall air corrector jet of 180, Emulsion tube 9164.1, Main gas jet of 157.
Idle gas jet 60.
accelerator pump jet 55.
I have 2 1/4" velocity stacks installed.
All i can find is talk about dual setups of this so i don’t know what i really should have in this to run right and i don’t want to just throw jets at it. HELP me before i rip this air cooled out and install a water cooled.

Why don't you call the guys at Blackline Racing in Murray? They are probably THE dellorto specialists in the country when it comes to VW.

Re: i need a Dellorto specialists help
I emailed jonh and he had me order a 125 mains and 55 idle and i coldnt even get it to start without stayng on the throtle and when i drove it it poped and spit the whole time. So i took the 125 mains and drilled them out to 157 and thats how i got it to run at all. i might just call him today and see what else he says

I'd still call Blackline...they actually deal with carbs every single day.

Re: i need a Dellorto specialists help
I've been in contact with a guy that's all he does is dellorto and he said vw engines don't really like singles. The single has a long way to go and it takes alot of fuel to be just right when it gets to the combustion chamber. He said the throat of the intake I'd way to big and even a 28 venturi I need to restrict it down even more. He said he has had to make restrict or plates that go under the carb base to get them dialed in. I'll try it I don't really have anything to loose. I have an air fuel gauge coming and will be here Wednesday so that will also help.

Was the carb bought as a single setup that's been run previously? Do the throttle butterflies have small holes drilled in each? What is your timing set at 28-32 deg BTDC? Last valve adjust?
Fresh rebuild, cam broken in? 20 mins @2000-2500 rpm?
Your carb sizing is good, we just need a bit more info

Re: i need a Dellorto specialists help
Carb and intake came together when I bought it used. Don't think it ran in a long time because it was dirty, I had to rebuild it. Motor and cam was already broke in I just installed new jugs and pistons. Holes I check in a little while when I get in the garage but it is the right carb of the dual setup it is not stamped with the L. Timing I'm not sure either my snap on timing light for some reason won't pickup the signal. But when I have it dialed in the best I can it runs like a dream. Fires up nice and when it warms up after a couple minutes it idles at 700 so smooth all day long.

Either has one little hole in each butterfly about .030.

Ok you need to close off the bypass screws, and you need to get your timing checked with a light that works

Re: i need a Dellorto specialists help
update for anyone that was helping me on this. I found out it wasn't my carb setup at all it was my electronic ignition taking a dump on me. i replaced the distributor with an 009 and points and called it done then I installed an o2 sensor so I could monitor everything on the dash and got it all dialed in and I love it. Thanks to everyone that helped me.
