EGT location
Hey guys. Looking to get an egt probe installed on my exhaust and I'm looking for some suggestion on where I should locate it.
I have a A1 sidewinder with a O2 sensor mounted after the merge collector. It is parallel to the ground with the wires facing the front of the car. I have room right next to it to mount a egt probe, but I'm curious if the upstream O2 sensor would influence the reading at all?
I'll see if there are any other possible orientation I can find. However, I wanted to hear from the group to see if there are any other considerations I should take into account when mounting the egt probe near a O2 sensor. I want to minimize any inaccurate readings, if any.
If it makes a difference, I'll be using a drill hole bung, not a weld in.
Thanks!
Michael

Re: EGT location
I plan to do EGTs, but IMHO I wouldn't do it unless you do one for each cylinder. I'm going to mount mine as close to the exhaust port as possible, the probe will probably stick inside it a bit.

Re: EGT location
EGT at the collector is meaningless unless you are hanging a turbo immediately after it.
4 inches from the center of the ex valve is the "industry standard" location where possible.
keeping them at a std distance is the only way to have comparable temps between installs.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: EGT location
I was afraid of you guys saying that. Going that route is going to be hard to justify as I'll need to triple my cost on the probes, bungs, and add additional channels on my IOx board. I had bought it a few months ago with 6 thermocouples, with intentions to only monitor all CHTs and 1 EGT, one for spare.
I was figure that having a single EGT to help get a overall tune. Basically applying the same thing as having a single O2. If we use the same rational, each cylinder should have a O2 sensor.
Please school me and I'll consider doing all four.

Re: EGT location
I only have one EGT sensor I used to help setup ignition timing and to get my CHT down--- I currently don't even have it hooked up (since going MS3) my MS2 setup had an EGT amp integrated.(error* board)
I have a place to plug it in (capped off) on all 4 pipes... 4" from the ex port, or as close as I could place it.
The egt data from a collector position will only mean anything to you.
You will not be able to compare it to anyone elses EGT numbers, ever.
I'd love to have 4 EGTs, 4 CHTs for tuning purposes, but once tuned, a waste for 99.99% of setups.
On a dyno it would be ideal.

Thats what I eventually will run.
The reason I would only run 1 per cylinder is because you can then tune on a per cylinder basis. Putting 1 in would really only be for self informational purposes.
I am going to just buy the bungs and weld them in first,
then eventually get the sensors for each,
then the canegt interface.
some nice EGT info:

I plan to use the EGT measurements to adjust fuel.

Re: EGT location
So after some research and consideration. I'll be doing the 4 egt probes. I'll give me some time to make room on the budget, which means I'll have the off season to work on getting it all installed.
I've already reached out to Jean on getting some components to expand my IOx board. After that, I'll get some more probes from DIY.
So is industry standard is 4" from that valve or from the mounting flange of the port?

Re: EGT location
I've heard 4" from the exhaust port on turbo, then 1.5" from the port on N/A apps. That's what I've done on my car in both applications.

Re: EGT location
1~1.5" from the flange will get you about 4" back from the valve itself, which is what you're aiming for.
