DIY hidden trigger?
i've got to run a drysump pulley so sadly mario's setup wont work i don't think?
i could buy the vwspeedshop kit which looks ace but i'm kinda cheap! if i have to, i will.
i do have a heavy duty floor mounted pillar drill though.
i was thinking of taking my drysump pulley and drilling the back face for 36-1 for MS, given its alloy i thought i would need to drill small holes and insert small magnets in the holes?
i've seen some small dia magnets on ebay which would press in alright....
any thoughts on this setup?
Cheers
will pop up some pics on my pulley wheel,The OD of my pulley seems to be 5.2in or 132mm....

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
I am using a dry-sump pulley as well, and ended up with the following:
and the following sensor location:
This can be done with a drill press and some careful measurementsYou do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
Have you considered pressing in roll pins, (also called press pins), instead of magnets?

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
My Redline 882C thread has info about how I did that. My FTP went down so I don't have the pics but the description is still useful.

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
Too bad my pics are gone.
Here is the thread;
http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... 3&t=135963
I bought a 36-1 trigger wheel on ebay. Very thin laser cut steel part. I positioned that on the pulley on the engine side (hidden from view). I initially roll pinned and epoxied the TW to the pulley. This didn't hold and the pins came loose. I Rebuilt it later with #6 taper headed flush mount machine screws in the same holes as originally the roll pins were in. It is working great.

Nice Steve!
I was implying using 35 roll pins instead of magnets though.

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
The reason I went to all that trouble is because I have a Fisher harmonic damper pulley that I wanted to use. It has clutch discs inside and didn't offer much meat for mounting the trigger wheel.

No I hadn't but the more I think on it, the better it sounds, great idea! Thank you

Re: DIY hidden trigger?
H mmm very interesting, I guess I could do shallow drillings in the flywheel leaving say 3-4 mm before breaking though.... Then have either no hole or a slot as my missing tooth....grelland wrote:I am using a dry-sump pulley as well, and ended up with the following:and the following sensor location: This can be done with a drill press and some careful measurements
Thanks bud another one to ponder!

RE: The flywheel "crank wheel"
The ONLY real "need" for a 36-1 pattern is if you are running EDIS, and then the sensor/missing tooth need to be at a specific angle from TDC.
MS2/3 will work FINE with a 12-1 pattern, or even a 6/1 pattern.
(I'd go with the 12-1 as there are 6 holes already, just add 5 in the same circle)
I'm unsure if other EFI setups allow random "generic" wheel patterns, but MS-extra is very flexible.
I ran a 6/1 setup, fully sequential, for years until I tested a pulley end wheel setup for Mario.
(It's only still installed because it would be more work to change back, and it works fine)
A T4 or WBX case make it easier as they have a big hole in just the right spot, but a T1 case could easily be drilled for the sensor.
Just use a PP bolt hole as your guide, perhaps through some tubing to protect the threads as a guide.
If you are going to run a stock doghouse oil cooler on a t1 case, consider doing the sensor ~where VW put the late model TDC sensor, on the other side.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

With the OD of these at 5.25" (~133mm)andy198712 wrote:i've got to run a drysump pulley so sadly mario's setup wont work i don't think?

And the OD of these at 4.75" (~120mm)
With this setup the sensor is really tucked into the case and can come out for a slightly larger inverted trigger wheel.
