Vanagon Intake Plenum - single throttle body versus four

Post by luftvagon »

How much of a restriction is the stock vanagon intake plenum and intake runners?

For my next project, i am thinking of welding and machining the intake chamber in order to relocate the throttle body to the top of the intake chamber. The chamber will accept GM Vortex throttle body.

Should I not bother? Are the intake runners cumbersome restriction? Should I be better off going with four throttle bodies mated to a straight intake runner?

What is the TB/butterfly size? A P+P job never hurts. Size is not the only thing that matters and bigger is not necessarily better. Changing single TB it is very easy to sacrifice driveability/throttle response (get it wrong). Manufacturers spend millions of dollars and tons of research getting the right TB to match the intake runners.

I had access to a flow bench years ago and tested a lot of different TBs and carbs. What surprised me was taking the biggest Jetta TB I had would slightly less flow than if a large intake pipe was added on it. You would think that the TB having nothing on it would flow more (open air), but the numbers did not say this. The intake pipe channelled and sped up the air flow.

Vanagon 2.1 TB throat size is 50mm, 1.9 size is 45mm.

I'm working on this project. A 2.2 wasser, adding a SC12 Toyota supercharger. Replacing the factory plenum with a 4" and using a 55mm throttle body.

O.K., I'm throwin' the BS flag on that one Mario. You CANNOT go teasing us like that with one measly incomplete photo of motor porn like that; it's just not nice!!

Trying to get the flows worked out. This was one of the first models.

I was just saying the same thing earlier. He is playing with mini bikes instead of blowing the wasser.
