Ignition table for Type 1 Custom EFI System

Post by Lateral »

Hi guys

I have recently purchased a 1967 Type 1 bug that had undergone a complete rebuild.

The car has a 1916cc engine that is managed by an Atom G4 ECU as part of a custom EFI setup and has a Crank Trigger setup for the "spark".

I am working through a list of "issues" with the car one of which is sorting out the EFI tuning.

I recently took the car to an EFI expert, Peter, (they mainly specialise in water cooled cars) who also has experience in the Atom G4 ECU (http://www.linkecu.com/products/engine- ... us/g4_atom) so that I could determine if the EFI setup had all of the necessary bits to ensure that we could get it running 100%..

We confirmed the following that the car has a TPS, Coolant Temp Sensor (reading from the Oil in crank), Air Temp Sensor, and MAPS. There is what appears to be a sensor located in the tinware about Cylinder # 1 that does not seem to be connected to the ECU so I will need to investigate this when I remove the engine. I think it may be a cylinder head temp sender of some sort.

Peter was great and found a number of "issues" with the configuration of the ECU....don't ask me what he found as my head is still spinning around

He also said that the system has everything that is needed to correctly configure the ECU so that it will become a great and reliable driver.

He suggested that I have the Injectors "flowed" to make sure that they are all doing what they are supposed to be doing.

He also asked me to see if I could locate an "Ignition Table" as that would make reconfiguration easier.

I have a few questions for the forum namely, what "tricks" or considerations do we need to think about regarding the tuning of a type 1 air cooled beetle engine using EFI???

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Regards
Greg

ps: I have attached a photo of the car.

Interesting sheet metal intake design, looks like it has an IAC as well.

Just plug in a mechanical advance curve to start off with, something to emulate an OO9 style curve to make tuning easy at first and after getting fuel sorted you can mess with adding vacuum advance and so forth. Try 14* near idle (base timing), advancing linearly to 30* by 2800 RPM. Depending on how it's set up it may take more or less total timing, that will take some dyno time to figure out. If it has low compression it will like more initial timing and less mechanical, vice versa with high compression.

Hi Miniman82!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a few questions:

1. What's an IAC?
2. How can I get my hands on a set of figures for the 009?

You have what appears to be a ford style IAC (fast idle thingy), neat motor I never seen a sheet metal intake on a street beetle.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Cute little intake plenum. I cut up a mexi intake plenum to do the same to, but haven't finished it.
