Most factory cars use fuel cut, not spark. Completely cutting fuel is just as useful as completely cutting spark, as combustion stops either way. You just don't get raw fuel dumped in to the exhaust and the cool flames with fuel cut.
I agree with using a soft and hard limit as mentioned above.
