I have a 914 Tailshifter, converting to 901 style but I cant find the internal shift rod(s) (tried pelicanparts already and the Porsche dealership wants to hear nothing about it)

Anybody know a good Transmission parts supplier that would have 901 parts?

I'm confused... the tail shifter IS a 901....

are you talking about switching to the later side-shift? if so, you are better off buying one... about 200 +shipping on ebay all the time including the shift linkages... and you can sell the tailshifter to recoup some of the cost(about 100+ if the synchros are good) or use the tailshifter as a spare to fix rough parts of the side-shifter... if you find the parts new... you will spend more than that...

Interesting. I have a tailshifter that has a gear selector lever sticking out the side of the nose cone. All I need is a 901 internal shift rod and it will be useable for rear engine applications, as of now i would need to engineer a completely different shifter.

look for a 66-69 911/912 tranny... still a 901, but already set up for the rear engine... it will have the parts you want, I believe...

Call Gary at PartsObsolete.com for the right parts. He should be able to help you. BTW If you are doing this to use in a rear engined car you will have to flip the diff otherwise you will have 5 speeds in reverse!

Already did :D

Gary told me to scrap the box. So I think I will.

I'm curious to see what happened to the tranny conversion. Did you ever get the nosecone? Why did you have to trash the transmission?

I found the parts I need on e-bay... so I think I'll go through with it! I got the nosecone for $25 from a guy who works at an import parts house in New York called "Iko Iko Motorsport"

I think his name was Thomas Evaul.

The shift rod was $36 from someone calling himself "Mike" on e-bay. His e-bay username is "miker992".

Got a front trans mount from another guy over ebay for something like $20

it adds up fast but I spaced it out over the course of about 4 months.

So you are going through with the 914 conversion then, good to know. I am going through the same thing with mine, but still haven't found the nosecone. I have the mount, and the rod.

wow... what is this... i had everything except the rod... lol

nosecones arent all that hard to find either... no worries. I think trying getting in contact with miker992 would be a good idea because he seems to have all manner of parts laying around.

I got one that was in fair shape (Idler shaft was rusty but a little 2000 grit fixed that up) from another guy, but he only had 3 and I was the last to request one.

That's good to know. Did you have to change any bushings?

How was the "ring flipping"? Which CV's are you going to use?

I was thinking of upgrading to the 930 anyways, and make sure that the tranny holds it. So far my biggest hiccop is the nosecone and the slecetor rod(from shifter to tranny)

so far I havent had to change any bushings... I just have to redo the gaskets and seals, but that time will come when I actually RECIEVE my shift rod. I'm very optimistic about the conversion. The ring flip wasnt all that hard, just time consuming. Be careful and keep the tranny up off the bench because I had trouble with the mainshaft going into and through my work table.  Cheap table....

Anyway, since I had about given up and tried to sell my 914 box on eBay  I flipped the ring and pinion AGAIN to make it work with a stock 914. Now I'll need to tear it down AGAIN to do it right and while I have it apart I can change the gaskets and seals... :-D

This oughtta be fun.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for the replies. Hey, practice does make Perfect! hehe

I am looking forwards to receiving my tranny. I plan on using this on the Ghia, once the stock gives up, so I should have some time to find the right parts.

Keep us posted, I will do the same.

I FINISHED TODAY!!!

It only took me about 3 hours. The single hardest part was a tie between replacing the oil seals and the actual shift rod.

To take out the 914 shift rod required taking out the cotter pin and then the actual retaining pin that holds the rod and the little floppy thing on the rod together. That took a good part of the afternoon to do.

The seals were hard because I always managed to bend them... then the input shaft seal wouldnt go into the hole for it, and the nosecone seal needed to be totally destroyed and removed with a dremel to get the new one in. Hopefully your luck wont be the same.

Then the nosecone would not seat properly on the intermediate plate so I had to grind off the top locating pin and make it flush with the rest of the intermediate plate surface.

Other than that the installation went as planned.

Thanks for the reply. No pics by any chance? When I get to work on mine, I will have a detailed history of progression and how the convert it over.

I have searched left and right online for a conversion "step-by-step" but nothing. Hopefully this would help other faulks trying to get this same thing done.

Hey, let me know how it turns out, and how it drives. The seal kits, did they come with the vinyl bushings also? or did you have to buy those sepparately?
