Sporto been done by the factory if that is "auto" enough for you.

How can you?

Lots of fabrication and custom-building. All of the ones that I have ever heard of have been done in the course of an engine swap as well. The builder simply swapped in a whole drivetrain complete.

Not for the faint of heart. No kits available that I have ever heard of.

Like Dave said...no kit's....however, the Audi transaxles could be adapted to work with enough time and money Image

The "easiest" I think would be to use an Audi or Passat engine/tranny combo and swap the entire drivetrain in....

Try a VW Type III fully automatic. They're borg warner designed, come from a VW and will handle stock 250 HP no prob. See the Type III links to see what's involved with at least getting a Type 4 motor into a Type III. Some of those ideas will transform over. BUT tranny is reverse of 914, as is the Audi ones for sure. Good luck .....

Actually, the Audi trannies spin the right way around. The earlier (pre TT) FWD Audis all had longitudinally-mounted engines, so the engine sat in front of the transaxle. Which is the same way it sits in the 914.

Most FWD cars today have transverse-mounted engines, so the engine sits off to the side of the transaxle. Not so easy to adapt.

I didn't realize there was a full auto-tranny version of the Type III. Was there one of the Type IV? You'd have to do some work to see what was involved in flipping the ring and pinion gears around to make the transmission turn the other way. But it might be less fabrication to get it to work than the other possibilities... Maybe...

Can't be done, the Audi idea is better.

Try a 411/412 auto trans as there should be a ton of those around. Most 411/412 cars came to the US with auto's from the factory. The stick cars went to Europe.

Marc, is it physically impossible to flip the R&P in the Type III or 411/412 auto trans, or just a major pain? I know people who have flipped 930 trannies, where you have to do a goodly amount of machining to make room for the new ring gear location.

Is there simply not enough metal around to fit the ring gear on the other side? Or is this one of the "well yeah, it's possible, but it's a pain enough that any other option is better"?

Would a Honda engine work as it turns the other way?

The type III and the type 4 auto were the exact same part. The only differences were the final drive ratios (there were a couple in both cars) the bell housing, the cv hubs..which are interchangable depending on wether they are early or late with through bolts into the differeential...or not. The diff comes off with 4 bolts and is a totally separate unit from the auto box section. So if you have a good diff and a bad auto box...its a 10 minute swap with a new pair of seals. Do not throw differentials from these away. they are bulletproof...and the parts are around to rebuid them. I have never tried it...but since the bolt pattern that holds the diff and bell housing is symettrcical...you may simply be able to flip it over. Ray

They are generally not too hard to find from the type 3. There are several ways to look at this. The type 3 and 4 auto boxes were identical...except for the bell housing, final drive ratio and a few adjustments. If you are putting this in a type 4....2 or 4 door sedan, and the auto matic is there...just bad...use one from a type 3 and swap the bell housing (5 minutes).
The type 3 auto had a couple of ratios for final drive as well, but the auto in the fastback had a 3.67:1 final drive.
I don't know if the bell housing from an auto bus will unbolt. If it does its should fit on a type 3 or 4. I would find a type 3 auto from a fastback and ask some of the type 4/ 411/412 people if they have a spare bell housing to sell. If they have more than one tranny at all, they could spare a bell housing. Ray
