My 1973 914 2.0

Post by Type 4 Unleashed »

I have been doing some suspension clean up since I work for my self very cheap. This is an Aluminum Crossbar out of a 911, I cleaned it up again and may have it clear coated this time before I put it back in.

The control arms are also 911, they did have the brackets for the 911 under body sway bar but I am going back to the stock thru body sway, the stock 914 -4 torsions are 17mm where the 911 torsions are 19mm, which are plenty for a street car. I am going back with new stock Rubber Front Suspension Bushings since this is mostly a street car, and I have to order new U tabs for the stock sway setup.

The rear suspension/drivetrain is getting upgraded to 108mm CV's, I have everything except the Sway Away Axles, and will post pics of the completed assemblies when I finally get the axles.

And the tranny was upgraded to a close 3rd & 4th and 5th went taller for freeway crusing.

The New Bushings & U Tabs have arrived.

Also in the Picture is one of my torsion bar adjusters, and you are looking at the bottom of the adjuster and you will notice it is welded up, so over time the bushings wear and as this happens the adjuster rotates more and more on the cross beam, then the torsion bar starts wearing the thru hole the torsion bar goes thru in the cross beam, one side could wear more than the other and the aluminum cross beams will wear faster than the steel ones, then several things become out of alignment. Well a fix for this other than replacing the rubber bushings was to weld up the area on the bottom of the adjuster to make up the wear in the bushings as you can see on this one to keep alignments & geometry's aligned.

Apparently this was a normal practice on the 911's.

The Bushings are $40 & the U tabs are $15 then another $10 for shipping from PMB Performance, this info is for anyone interested in doing a 911 suspension swap or going thru your -4 suspension, which I think is a cheap investment.

I forgot to mention, others have worked out this formula for bushing choice due to the type of ride provided by the bushing material, the softer rubber bushing are pretty much like the original stock factory bushings which is the choice I went, which provide a some what softer ride compared to the hard Poly Bushing or the Elephant Bronze bushing or the Roller Bearing bushings.

So the formula goes something like this for 80% street & 20% track or auto X the rubber bushings are the preferred choice, for 80% track or auto X & 20% street then the harder bushing options are used. These formulas are from people who have used both in both areas, but your preference is the final choice.

Tarett 26mm Sway Bar, it adjusts from a 19mm Bar's stiffness to a 26mm Bar.

I had picked up some 7.5" & 9" x 17" Turbo Twists and was able today to do some mock ups.

Right now the fronts have 215/45 tires and the rears 255/40's. They mounted right up but with very little clearance on the inside, so I'll probally run 1.0" spacers then run 235/45's front and 275/40's rear.

Here are my S Calipers, I had them de-anodized then polished, then clear anodized.

I'm droolin' here. . .

I absolutely LOVE the Tarett sway bars. Best money can buy IMHO. I've installed a couple for my clients and no one ever regrets it.

I had all the front end piece's clear Anodized to protect the aluminum. I installed the bearing races and studs in the hubs,
so everthing is ready for assembly as soon as I find some Bilstein struts so I can do droped spindles.

Picked up the wheels today and had the tires mounted and balanced.
They balanced out nice with very few weights, I was surprised. The
Ronals at times have talken a bunch of weights to balance out which
I didn't really like. And I know it was mostly due to the tires, one time
I had the tire shop rotate the tire on the rim to see what would happen
and the weights just follwed the rotation of the tire.

Should look good on the car.

I'm hanging in there Richard. Trying to get back into the swing of things. Reaquired a 73 roller. Trying to get it running. Looking to the old school guys for advice. I've been lurking on the 914 boards.

I'm a sucker for cars that don't run...
