I can't speak for the repros.... i've never seen the backside.
The problem with disc brakes is the centering ring on the German rotors. I have Brembo rotors and they have the ring. Some ATE have them and some done. The Brazilian and Chines rotors do not.
If you have rotors with the ring, it hits the back of the wheel. You can either machine the ring off or use a 1/4" spacer.
Pedrini (1970-72) alloys come in 2 versions, one was for front drum and they do not fit and the later come for front disc and they do fit.
Mahle 4 bolt (1973-76) all came for front disc
Fuch 2.0l 4 bolt (1973-1976) all came with front disc.
Pedrini cast aluminum
Pedrini early left and late right. notice the detail at the end of the rib.
Pedrini early
Pedrini late
Mahle cast aluminum 4 bolt
Fuch forged aluminum 4 bolt
914 361 013 00 Pedrini early
914 361 013 01 Pedrini late
914 361 015 00 Mahle
914 361 011 01 Fuchs

Interesting. That centering ring on the rotors is for the august of 72 on front rotor that the 412 and 914 use....if we are speaking of the same thing. The problem with removing that ring....is that that ring....is what keeps the later models of rotor from flexing....and therefore not requiring the internal alignment pin in the front caliper like the type 3 had. Hmmmmm. Ray

The 5-lug conversion crowd commonly cut that lip off without issues on the later rotors.
The casting is pretty beefy in that area.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

True...but then again....most people do not know how to recognize the symptom of what that centering ring was made to prevent. In severe case (lots of hard braking through turns and lots of city driving) it manifests itself by slowly chewing up rotors toward the center (taper) due to flex....leaving un-rebuildable chatter marks inside the caliper cylinders and in rare situations letting a caliper piston @@@@ in the bore and stick.
Many people just get used to replacing calipers every 70k. Ray
edit: its funny how the programming here censored the word "c*ck" in the sentence above

My Wheels!
Now that I have a set of 914 2L Fuchs Rims, the front wheels are only clearing the Calipers by 1/8".....Wheel spacers of 1/4", 3/8", or 1" are available. Don't know just how little I can get by with.

1/8" is more than enough.Lew wrote:Now that I have a set of 914 2L Fuchs Rims, the front wheels are only clearing the Calipers by 1/8".....Wheel spacers of 1/4", 3/8", or 1" are available. Don't know just how little I can get by with.
"Doesn't scrape" is really all you need...
The late 914 Mahles w/195-60s fit on a late T3 like they were meant to go there, I WANT to say they are 5.5xEt38, but I'd have to go look.
They hit the springs on an early super, due to the offset, the super would need a 2.5" coil over kit or the equivalent Topline struts.
(Probably the same on the 73+ supers, but i don't have one handy)
The Pile donated its set of 5 Mahles to the Squareback when I bought it new shoes... 18x8 and 18x11 Twists off a 996TT.
(Yes, I will have to stretch the rear GT flares, but not much)
If you do feel the need to add spacers, yank everything and install long Porsche studs, and buy a set of the Porsche aluminum lug nuts. (used OEM is worth the money vs the usual EBAY junk)
I got a good used set of the OEM lockable (with a key, the outer housing spins when locked) Porsche lug nuts in black anodized aluminum for $45 IIRC.

Thanks Pile!
When looking on the inside of the rims, the bottom side of the lower ball joints on the dropped spindles are almost touching the rims. However the body is not on the chassis. Once the weight of the body is on the front beam, the swing arms and ball joints should move upward and clear the rims OK.
