A friend of mine is putting a Subaru 2.2 into a VW type 3 with a bus trans. It is a nice fit. I look forward to a ride before long.

I'm doing that swap now!
I just don't know which gearbox is best though, & have set it up with the stock box to begin with.
Why did he go with the type 2 box?
Is his car running?

He used the bus box just because he had one setting there. It was not running as of Thursday. He had pulled the engine back out to work on the exhaust. He will be running twin exhaust with small mufflers. He fabed a motor mount that uses the Subaru mounting points. Pretty neat looking. He also made the adaptor plate and the flywheel. I will be glad when he gets it finished. He is working on a wireing harness for my Subaru into a bug project. I would like to get it finished so I can hear my engine run again.

While the engine is out, could you ask him to take pics of the engine mount, exhaust,etc... I'm considering the same conversion for my
fastback with IRS(no tranny forks). Always nice to see engine hanger

If you e-mail me I'll send pics of the subframe I built for my fasty.
It carries the rad & exhaust mounts and ties into the original subaru engine mounts.
I'm away from tomorow until the weekend but I'll get them to you asap.

Sorry to drag this up but was that subframe on an early or late model fasty? I am doing a late model squareback now and seems the only type 3 conversions I am finding are early models where they have the trans horn.

You have a couple of options as I understand it...
1. Get an early rear crossmember with the horns and convert it to IRS.
2. Make up your own set of "horns" using the crossmember you have.

I'd lean toward no.2 if I was doing it (I did one in a buggy years ago). All the later buses/411s/911s have the engine and trans hanging from the frame like your car. I'd also take the opportunity to beef up the rear engine hangers and stiffen/triangulate mounting points similar to a kafer bar kit. You should be able to do it all with a cheap MIG welder and some 1" square steel tube.

You're other challenge will be the depth of the sump and avoiding it dragging.

Yeah custom engine hanger bar is the way forward.

I went off from the VW body/engine mounts to the stock Subaru engine mounts. Loads of info over on aussieveedubbers.

Weird looking bar.

I also went up into the bottom of the boot floor with my bar, my mistake was not reinforcing the floor area as it eventually tore a hole which needed repairing and one day strengthening. Just no more burnouts in the mean time.

This is in my notchback so the rear boot has been sacrificied for an engine bay.

There is a guy on the samba who created a bespoke inlet manifold and got everything in underneath the square backs engine hatch. Very impressive

Mine also has a shortened sump, but as my engine is much higher anyway it’s not too low.

Check out Ricola racing for a cheap shortened sump ideas.
