Another EJ22 Super Beetle Conversion
So i guess instead of making a new thread at every problem, I'll start a build thread that people will hopefully read and maybe help me with. I call her Doris, and She's a 1973 Super beetle, original paint job and color. (this was a big deal to me when i started looking) Ill start from the beginning for those interested, but if you want to see the current state skip the next bit i suppose. sorry the pics are big and plentiful.
im moving this from vwkd because it seems not very many people use that site.
I bought the car a few years ago. Had a stock(mostly) 1600 dp in it. the entire car was mostly stock. after about a year of daily driving it, when i was going to work one day my brake master cylinder gave out when flying down a hill, and i ended up crushing the front up pretty bad.
so i grabbed a 1974 fender i had laying around and drilled some holes in it and bolted it up and threw some bungies on the hood.
it looked awful but it is my daily driver, and i was broke. i slowly started fixing it. starting with brakes. i got a front disk conversion from EMPI. next time ill get it from topline cuz the kit was kinda annoying. i kept drums in the back but replaced every part while i was at it. got a new master cylinder and replaced every rubber break hose. It gets hot balls here so i got some deck lid stand offs. I prefer how they look personally anyway. did quick shift kit, stereo, powered windows, wipers, fixed stuff etc etc. ended up with this..
anyway one day driving to the vw parts store for some cool stuff im sure and i bottomed out my oil pan on a speed bump and my engine cut out. I figured i mangled the internals or something cuz it wouldnt re start. got it towed to the property where i work on cars and pulled the engine.

in the the midst of all this i found out that when i hit the ground my coil power came undone. i figured id rebuild it anyway cuz it had been acting up before anyway. then i saw Joel's thread and i was set. i sold the 1600 as is to a friend of mine for like 500 bucks and started gathering subaru parts and taking crap apart..
http://s1045.photobucket.com/user/press ... ort=3&o=12
So here's where i am now. I got the engine and all the goodies with it and wiring harness from pick and pull for like 300 bucks from a 98 legacy. i stole the vin plate for good measure too. i would have liked a donor car but i couldnt find one. I also got the KEP adapter, some rubber fuel hose, a fuel pump, and engine lift. (cuz im scrawny lol) and a donor super beetle that is rusted to crap with no vin plates, enigne or much of anything else really for like 150 dollars.
i did wiring first while waiting for parts in the mail. It was not as bad as everyone thinks. it does currently look like crap because im still testing everything. will clean later.
I got the engine in pretty easily. i had to drill out the rubber a smidge. but it worked out yeah yeah
also started repairing the front, and getting fuel pump in. im sure ill have to do the surge tank thing sooner than later... pardon the mess.
currently im trying to get it started. i think the computer is gettting power and working because when i use my obd2 code reader it says its throwing 5 codes. my check engine light dosnt come on though. i have it getting power from the pin on the ecu. should it be ground from ecu or what? my fuel pump relay also isnt spitting out power. it sounds like its clicking on but im not sure atm. my main relay is working right i think. i have the alternator set up with the post going to the battery thru the old vw loom, the black/white wire is going to an LED that gets ignition power and the other white wire is going to ignition power. i think thats right. the computer is getting power from battery and also has a wire going to the starter (hot when starting) right now im manually plugging the fuel pump in after ignition but its not picking up fuel probably because the tank is empty i think. (my speedo is out of car right now) when i go out tomorrow i am going to try to get it started from a gas can for test. when i cranked it though it sounded a little weird and was cranking waaayyy slower than the vw engine. maybe need a new starter maybe somethings not right. ill check when i head out tomorrow.
anyone know of a way to check if computer is working properly? also anyone have an idea on why my check engine light isnt coming on?

My ECU supplies the ground for the check engine light. Different year and different engine than you though. A test light would help there. Are you working off a wiring diagram?

Re: Another EJ22 Super Beetle Conversion
i have a 98 auto ecu.
http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Le ... CU_I-O.pdf that is the wiring diagram im using. it was pretty useful because i chopped a few things out and forgot to label them. Something i would like to know is do i need a atmospheric pressure and map sensor? i dont remember seeing them in the car when i pulled everything out.
what i have is the ecu, and the entire engine loom. my loom has two wires, green and purple if i remember right for guages i think. im not 100% sure on this. i marked every empty wire, and i dont see any of those colors i think. its been a minute though. anyway the car starts ill post a video later.

anyway here is the first start. i shut it off pretty quick because i wasnt expecting it to be so loud lol. and it seemed like it was idling really high. granted i have a ton of vaccume leaks so, this weekend ill plug everything and plumb everything that needs to go thru the AFM.

Re: Another EJ22 Super Beetle Conversion
So couple questions that i hope someone has a bit of insight on.
I have the the two valve cover breathers, and the crank case breather, then a bunch of other random air lines. does anyone have a diagram of how all this should be. i accidentally created some bull crap jigsaw puzzle of all the stuff that was there.
Other question is my engine is a 98 ej22, and has all the EGR crap. problem is my egr solenoid hits the firewall. what have you guys done with this? can i just delete the entire egr system or what?

Re: Another EJ22 Super Beetle Conversion
The 2 rocker cover vents and case vent original Tee together and run to the main intake hose between the throttle body and airflow meter..
The other hose would be the idle air control valve hose, it also needs to connect to the intake hose aswell.
The EGR could be blocked off if you don't need it for emissions.
Has it got an electric solenoid controlling it?

Well technically i need it for emissions here, but we dont tell the government about our engine swaps in Cali. 1975 and earlier vehicles dont have to worry about emissions (smog here) so if you keep your mouth shut, it ususally works out.
my egr valve that sticks off the manifold is this ugly thing.. [img]

so could i take the 2 rockers, and case and put them together in a breather? i think i remember iacv needing to go thru the intake hose for idling to work right

My conversion uses a EMS Stinger - I put my 2 rockers and case vent into a breather, blocked off the idle control valve with a metal plate. There are several ways to get a cold start valve installed to help with cold motor.

you blocked off the iacv? or the EGR?
