1996 vs 1998 EJ22 engine and Wiring harness

Post by Chantruese »

We just finished pulling the engine out of our 1998 Impreza Outback, and were getting ready to start pulling all of the wiring harness. However, the guy that wants to buy the shell has the wiring harness and ECU out of a 1996 legacy. How similar are the harnesses? If I kept my 1998 ECU and engine, would the stripped down 1996 harness be workable? I was planning on sending the harness out to be stripped, curious if there are any instructions I should provide for the guy doing the work.

Who is doing your harness? They should be able to tell you if the 98 and 96 harness are the same.
I would also suggest using the guy who did my harness. Goes by jrobe on here. Advertises on Samba.

I modify 1990-04 Subaru EJ22 and EJ25 NA harnesses.

That's who is doing it! :)

I messaged him earlier, and he said tat they were maybe the same, but didn't know for sure. It seems like 1996-1999 are pretty much the same, and the ECUs are interchangeable. Going to have the dude that's buying the shell/giving me the other harness bring it over to compare. Was hoping someone here had experience with both and knew off the top of their head.

It really doesn't take long to pull the harness out of the donor car. I found it to be real easy.

I know that pulling it isn't difficult, that's got nothing to do with why I asked. It's entirely financial. I've got someone that is willing to pay cash for the car if I leave the harness in (willing to pay MORE than I paid, and that's already after parting out enough to get 50% of my initial investment back.) It would go a long way to paying for other parts, like the adapter plate, disc conversion all the way around, etc. I don't mind pulling the harness at all, but the dude that wants the car DOES. He doesn't want to try to put everything back where it goes.
