'nuter subaru conversion ej22 and microsquirt

Post by Andym »

well… heres another vw guy doing the subaru swap…
Current parts
ej22 motor
microsquirt
tunerstudio
stock motor with stock injection
STI Crank trigger wheel 36-2-2-2

I got the motor out of a 1991 subaru legacy..

the engine is currently on an engine test stand so i can get it running.
Here are some of my current problems.
I can turn it over with the crank trigger wires red to red(VR1) and black(VR1) to white and it will start, it acts like its only firing off 1 cylinder per side… very little if no throttle response, just dies. sporadic RPM on the laptop tuner studio program.
Switch the crank trigger wires, red to black(VR1), white to red(VR1), it turn overs like it should, won't start. Reads RPM while it turns over at 320 rpm on the laptop.
I know I have fuel and spark, it just seems like my timing is off.
Current wiring
Injector 1 wire to the 1/4 cylinder side
Injector 2 wire to the 2/3 cylinder side
3 wires out of the "coil" 1 red is to power, 1 yellow to ignitor 1 wire, 1 yellow to ignitor 2 wire, ignition 1 from ms to ignitor, ignition 2 from ms to ignitor

i tested the coil with a Ohm meter, 1-2 good, 3-4 good, but 2-3 not showing power--anyone else test their subaru coil?

Im still learning as I go… I'm really surprised that their isn't a subaru to ms wiring diagram..
any help is good.. i'll get some pictures later posted up.

yes sir…. originally this motor was going into my square back..thats why its all custom made and low. but that got a 2276 instead…

I took that intake off and now have a stock intake. I have plans of this going into my super beetle.

Glad to see you posting up Andy

Might be doing that conversion to the square if the 1800cc doesn't work out.

These are the 2 wires. This way it will run, but 1 cylinder on each side. If I flip the wires it won't run but the rpm on the screen works correct.

How can you see the RPM working on the screen if it's not running ?

Does that shielding cable need to be grounded or attached to the sensor?

I agree. From your description, you are running wasted spark and semi-sequential injection. Coil1 needs to connect to cylinders 1&2 and coil2 needs to connect to cylinders 3&4. Injector1 needs to connect to cylinders 1&2 and injector2 needs to connect to 3&4.

Cylinder numbers viewed from top of engine:

What does the tooth logger show when you have the VR sensor wired each way? My guess is that the way that gives you a good RPM signal is probably correct, but the tooth/composite logger would tell better. Set the Input Capture to Rising Edge and leave it there.
Agree that the cable shield needs to be grounded, one end only.
You may need to add a shunt resistor between the VR+ and VR- wires to counter some noise. 2.2k-10k ohm is the common range, you'll have to find what works best.

I got it all figured out. I downloaded ms2extra firmware, when I loaded it to my microsquirt I used megasquirt.s19 not microsquirt.s19

It runs and runs correctly now. I need to figure out how to change my rpm, at closed tps it idles at 1500.. Still some stuff to figure out.

Another question… I got my engine running… How do I set my timing? at idle its anywhere between 18 to 22 degrees--it moves around.. Full advance is around 39 degrees.. that all according to the tunerstuido tach on my laptop.. its still on my engine stand, I'm trying to figure all this out before it goes into the car.

setting in tuner studio. use table or number (something like that) in ignition settings put in 10 degree and check number 1 spark with timing light, than go back to table.

Subaru numbers the cylinders differently.
Physically the firing order is the same.

pretend it's an acvw and wire accordingly
1/3 by the trans
2/4 by the pulley.

wire 1/3 and 2/4 as pairs, 2 squirts simultaneous and don't forget to turn on semisequential to you can set the injector firing angle. Consistency cannot hurt. I know on sequential the angle matters most at idle>~3K, but you will have to play with it.

Semisequential is built in, no mods, just wire it correctly and turn it on.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Figured I'd update this because I don't like when people don't update after questions.

I got it figured out on the engine stand. Been working on getting it in the car. It's a lot of small jobs. But going good.

Here's a short video on YouTube.
