What's the total height of the stk Subaru oil pan? Plus more

Anyone know the overall height of the stk oil pan? I'm still undecided of how I'm going to go. Right now I have mine semi done but not totally happy with the overall design.

I'd maybe like to copy the Outfront one but would like to know the height of that cut down one.

My bus is pretty low so this is why I'm waffling. Mine like Joels a little and crossed with roachghia70's.

I think the stock oil pan is about 6.5 inches high. But I guess I'm confused on the question, you already have a subaru engine, is your oil pan missing or something that you can't measure it?

I measured about 6" to the bottom of the drain plug from the block, could be +/- a little bit though.

I have mine cut down and kick outs done but not sure if this is the way to go. I might just want to have the pan sliced down to about 4" with no side kick outs. Outfront cuts off 1.5" and like I said before I see lots of 4" overall pans. Just want to do this once.

Assuming your current modified pan is not interfering with anything, why go to the extra expense and effort to start over with less capacity? What exactly are you concerned about that you're not saying? Pans are cut 1.5" because it puts the bottom of the pan just above the lowest point of header so it's not the first thing to hit the ground, about where a deep sump on a VW would be so the ground clearance is comparable, without removing much actual capacity because you can run the oil level high. And the modification is pretty simple and cheap. Adding kickouts adds to the cost/effort to build so it's less common. You've already done that extra work, why throw it away?

I cut them to 4" and extend them towards the front and keep the stock oil capacity.

My stock oil pan is about 6 1/8" tall. I cut mine to 4 5/8", just tall enough to protect the oil filter (with the stock oil cooler). I filled up the bottom cut off part of my pan (with water) and I measured 35 ounces. I planned to square up the one sloped side of the pan and add capacity around the bottom of the pan to get back to stock. I'm trying to keep the oil from spreading out with big bump outs...just the way my logic leads me to think that big bump outs allow the oil someplace to "hide" from the oil pickup. No idea if I'm right, but that's the way my brain sees it. Based on my calcs (35 ounces to 63 cubic inches), I only need an added 1" wide by 2" tall section around the perimeter of the bottom of the oil pan to roughly equal the lost capacity. A lot less bump out than you typically see.

A little long winded, but you get the idea...

I will add that I hear that Subarus seem to get into trouble with oil starvation in race situations. There are a lot of Subi race cars with dry sump setups. I also know that one of our fellow convert perverts did several donuts and blew a bearing from oil starvation. Definitely something to take serious!

I have an Outfront oil plan if you want pictures or anything. It's about 4 1/2" deep now. Outfront's instructions say to use the stock amount of oil - that there's plenty of clearance between the pan and crank.

I'm going to go this route now. Makes sense and I can run a motor mount also.

Not mine but sample pic from http://www.ricola.co.uk/ 's site.

I reckon you should go as short as you need to fit with your cars needs.

Ours are 85mm shorter than stock and with custom headers and the SubaruGears Transmissions we get everything up nice and tight so the sump plug in the transmission is the lowest part of the package. The design adds hydraulic baffling and an extra 100mm of capacity.

Is that the latest COR one or a very early one in the top pics?

I see it has cutouts for the oil pump studs, mine doesn't and they are hard up against it.

Other than that only complaint is I can get oil surge under really and I mean really hard cornering due to the width
my subi mechanic wanted to put anti surge gates in the center of it, he uses them in his track WRX and they work well.

How close to the bottom of the oil pan is the dipstick ?

Have some of you had to cut down the dipstick for proper readings when cutting down the pan?

You don't modify the dip stick. If you want the oil level to be the same distance below the crank as stock, you would just use the stock fill markings on the dipstick. Now depending on the mod, you are likely cutting the capacity of the oil pan, so you may want to run over full on the dipstick. There is enough extra space below the crank to do that, though in my opinion you'd probably want to keep it to an extra 1 quart or less. According to Outfront, with a 1.5" chop, you can run the same 5 quarts as stock without issue. And for reference, the distance between the Low and Full holes on the dipstick represents just over 1 quart.
