Urabus...it's in the works (Subaru EJ20T build)

Post by panel »

Well the motor is gone/sold. Just have to undo some more wiring for the guy etc. Motor is out already and at the new owners house.

....and the the EJ20T,intercooler ,MAF,ECU etc is already shipped and on its way.

I guess this will be the build thread :)

I just came for the cookies :D

Questions:

1) Can I run my fan(s) as a stand alone? Meaning not controlled by the ECU?

2) Also, when I top mount the fans are they to be pushed or pulling the air? I'll have a belly mounted rad.

Nice! so many build threads going on, this is awesome.
What year motor/ecu is it? If the ecu can control it, why not? if that is not an option or your desire, Spal as several solutions, they have 185 or 195* temp sensor switch
http://www.spalusa.com/store/main.aspx? ... item=195TS

or you could go with their programmable unit that allows for different temps and fan speeds

regarding push vs pull, i thought i remember that electric fans are more efficient pulling, but dont quote me on that

Automatic Digital Temperature Controller Thermostat 12V

Programmable temperature switch. I'm going to use one for my oil cooler fan.

Pulling is definitely the most efficient. I have had many different fans, Flex-a-lite etc etc but the two BEST were a 14 in Permacool with a tstat (Flowed some AMAZING CFM) and a factory Ford Taurus electric fan. (I have that on my project now and it flows a ton, 20 bucks at the pull a part as well)

I've got top-mounted pusher fans on mine and they work well for me, but the ABA/JH hybrid I've got generates less heat probably...

Started to dismantle the things I'm not using like the power steering pump and take off the air conditioner etc. I'll then move on to taking the header off,oil sump and turbo etc.

The wastegate actuator and wiring seem to be complicated. :? Any simplifying techniques?

Panel,
looks great. i was looking at your gallery, i see they just cut the front wbo2 at the nub. if you can see the denzo part number, see if they can send your the same part with the full pig tail. thats what i had to do with mine but i did find the usdm denso equivalent. i ended up also putting another bung for a true WB02 sensor from the LC-1 i had for turning. regarding simplifying the wastegate actuator, just lock out the internal waste gate and go external. what turbo is it?

Looks like you have the barcode on the front of the timing cover. The code on it will help you find parts. Should start EJ205xxxxxxx..... I'm guessing. I've heard that the automatic cars were de-tuned slightly, so you probably have some tuning potential there!

I have a buddy who has done a lot of Vanagon / Subaru swaps and has asked me if I got the 'fuel pump controller' with it.

What is it I'm looking for?

Can I get by with out it?

I was also looking at some wiring diagrams and wondered if I'm supposed to have an OBD connector? And should I also be looking to see if I have the 'test/fault code' green plug somewhere ?

this was what my fp controller looked like
Image

I would guess you can do without it, just run signal from ecu to a bosche style relay just like with ms.

and my obd2 conntector looked like this upper of the 2 connectors

regarding the test/fault code green part. i ended up just wiring up to a switch. when i need to flash to ecu, i just hit the button which grounds it and then go thru the rest of the sequence if turning the ignition key to on and laptop to access.
