I noticed the other day that on pipe that goes out of the turbo to the intercooler I had a bit of oil puddling up in the pipe. I'm assuming that the turbo probably needs a rebuild, anyone have a good place to get a rebuild kit from?

Last Friday I had a day off of work for Veteran's Day. Thank you to all that have served so we can be free. I hooked up with an old friend, Kevin, from http://www.coolrydescustoms.com and trailered my car over to his shop. He's doing the exhaust for my car. He's built many VWs that have ended up on the covers of VW magazines and offers a bunch of very cool custom VW related parts. I know my car is far from that level of quality, but dammit, I know the exhaust will be awesome. I can't wait to get the car back.

Well while it's there Surf - Kevin's got some juicy suspension bits that would be right at home on your ride! You only live once - right??!! :-)

Oh yes he does. He's got another 67 with the full Mendeola Suspension front and rear. It was up on a lift so I was under it drooling. My next big dream item would be to convert to IRS and go Subragears on the trans. Kevin was showing me lots of cool stuff. I just need to win the lottery...

I went back many pages in my thread and found that some of the older attached photos are no longer there. The forum says that they don't exist anymore. Anyone know why? I'm kinda bummed that their gone, I still have them on my computer but it sucks for anyone reading this to see that they are missing. It's funny, the inline photos seem to still be there.

Surf - were your pics attached directly to the post, or linked from a photo hosing site? I use photobucket (although it frankly sucks with all the ads and other crap going on there) and link to the photos I want to post. However, once I decided to do a little photobucket re-organization and then realized all the photos I'd previously linked from STF no longer showed up, since the link "locations" had changed. Had to go back and re-link to the proper location.

Looking forward to hearing that new exhaust! Looks great!

So most of my pics were attached to the post, I read elsewhere in the forum that photos prior to the last upgrade of the forum software are still there but the upgrade broke the links. If the admin can't get that resolved for all of the posts affected, I may have to go through and repost the pics to fix it.

I'm at the point now that I'm looking to hookup my tachometer. The Link manual states "The LEM tacho signal will NOT drive a tachometer designed to run from the coil negative" So my existing tach is a VDO usually found in some old Porsches and is only 6,000 rpm. Of course it runs from the coil negative. The hole is about 3 inches, I have to get the exact measurement when I get home. What range should I get, 7000 or 8000 RPMs? I either pay about $100 and get a analog to digital signal converter, use my existing tach, or get a new one. I'm leaning towards a new one that also has a shift light.

Also, I just got a Grimmspeed boost control from Amazon. I contacted Grimmspeed and they told me that all of their solenoids are the same, differences are the directions of the ports, the wiring harness attached, and the mounting brackets. He also said that the Mazda 3 or 6 versions of their controllers had longer wiring attached to it in case I needed to splice the wiring. But I'm cheap and bought a Subaru version with a shorter wire from Amazon because it offered one day delivery for Amazon Prime. With that said, I found that you don't need the T hose with the Boost Pill in it if I use the three port controller. If you use the two port stock style, then the T hose with the pill in it. Of course, I just bought a T hose from Ebay last week, doh! Anyone want to buy a T hose and boost pill?

Besides the "standard" gauges, there are lots of "dual" gauge options to add a 2nd smaller gauge inset in the tach, like maybe a boost gauge? (Scratch that - I think they only offer a small speedo 2nd gauge on tachs, and only on the 4" or larger gauges.) You have to work your way though designing your own gauge with bezel, face, font, needle, etc. You can spend hours trying to decide - but its fun!
I went with an 8K range, figure the EJ can easily rev to 7K.

Thanks Jeff, I'll check them out. The car is running extremely rich. I haven't figured out all of ins and outs of tuning yet, but I did see the cold start enrichment setting and cut to 1/3 of what it was set to. It was better but still rich, it's still got the JDM spark plugs and no boost controller hooked up.Here's a video of it running with the new exhaust

Yes that's the new tach I ordered, it will be ready in a month and go into the center of this cluster.

Now I'm thinking I could slowly replace the other gauges to match. It was cool how I was able change the style of the tach on the website to match the font and style of my VDO guages and the boost gauge.

Sweet! Yea - those Speedhut gauges are Nice! If you're not in a hurry, they run specials a few times a year. I ended up breaking up my gauge purchases over a couple of orders. Helps keep the per-order costs down. :shock:
Be sure to verify the sender cable lengths you'll need, might have to specify longer than standard cables depending on the gauge type.
Exhaust sounds good! Kind'a like a big displacement VW with a mild cam. Almost ready to Rock'n Roll!

I spent part of Wednesday and all day Thursday working on the car. I relocated the heater box to under the back seat. Kevin at Coolrydes showed me how he had done one and I copied that idea. I still have to install the ducting hoses and tap into the factory heater channel. I concentrated more on getting the box under the seat and running the 5/8" hoses. I'm still having some coolant bleeding issues. What I have done is run hose from the heater loop (the one that comes from the coolant manifold on the top of the engine) to a gauge sender (the sender does restrict the flow a bit) then to a T. The T then continues down to the heater box under the back seat. If you remember from many pages ago, the heater is a simple pass through heater box. The other piece of the T goes up to a single coolant tank. The tank is a 2005-2015 VW Jetta Coolant tank which is mounted up higher than every thing else in the cooling system.

I had the stock Subaru surge tank in line between the turbo and the other end of the subaru coolant manifold, but tonite it flat out broke, it was brittle. Before it broke, I was trying to bleed the system, some air came out but not all. As a result of the broken surge tank, I pulled it and ran the hose from the turbo straight to the coolant manifold. Any thoughts on this? Also, my radiator in the front currently has a 14 psi cap but I have blocked off the overflow outlet. I was contemplating on using the original factory metal fuel line and connect the radiator to the front opening of fuel line and then on the rear, connect it to the Jetta coolant tank and just not have a surge tank. Any ideas on this?

Currently, I'm just running distilled water in the system, no coolant. I figure it's cheaper than antifreeze and no worries if I leak it when working on the system. Plus I'll be changing the front beam so I have to disconnect the front hoses when I do that. I really want to get the cooling system ironed out before I spend the money on antifreeze.

If the coolant tank is a pressurized part of the cooling system ,then it should "drain" into one of the "inlet" nipples on the water pump. ALA you have continuous flow out of the upper water manifold, through the tank, then into the water pump inlet you should be good to go. Just make sure any rises in the hose layouts have a bleed of some sort.

According to my flow diagrams, the turbo gets its cooling water "from" the top of the engine, off the back of the cylinder head - which is basically the same (pressure) as the upper water manifold. I don't think you'll get much water flow plumbing the outlet back into the manifold - it needs to go either back into the coolant tank, or tee into the drain from the tank to the water pump. From what I can see, any water that comes out of the engine - upper manifold, upper cylinder heads, oil cooler - all have to feed back into the inlet(s) at the water pump. Feeding them (where possible) through the coolant tank at the high point in the system provides a multi-inlet junction, a place to add water to the system, and a high point to separate out the air.

Thanks Jeff that makes sense. I had moved the surge tank from the stock location to the rear of the car, keeping the connections the same. So the hose went from the back of the head to the turbo, then to the surge tank and then to the upper water manifold. Last night, all I did was remove the surge tank and go straight from the turbo to the water manifold. When you are referring to the water pump inlet, do you mean the heater loop? Right now I can't seem to visualize the water pump inlets.
