4a-ge Bay window kombi
G'day all,
I'm currently converting my daily driven type 4 powered bay to Toyota 4age 16v.
So far I have purchsed an adapter kit and flywheel from John Sherman here in Australia.
I'm bidding on a few motors on ebay at the moment. Does anyone know what other Toyota motors would bolt up to the same kit. 3sge? 3sgte perhaps?

Not sure what will bolt to what but I put a 4A-GE in my split and it fit in there very well with no cutting needed. Rather than use an e-Bay takeout I went to the boneyard and removed one from an MR2. I got the wiring harness, ECU and lots of other related stuff. Total cost of my engine here was $400. There are plenty of sites on line to get the pinouts. I did an overhaul on the engine but was not necessary. They say to just pull one main bearing and if it's OK then put it back together. On mine, everything miked out stock, so I put new bearings and rings in.

When I bought my adapter for a 4af swap (not the best engine but at $200 for the whole car I couldn't pass it up, cheaper than a stock rebuild, bulletproof and plenty of power for a 1500lb buggy
) anyways KEP said that the adapter itself would fit any A series engine but the flywheel would only fit the F series (8bolt).
I don't really like the idea of buying an engine off ebay, too much hassle and cost... IMO find something at a local junkyard or just buy I complete running wrecked car. I found a complete running 89 Corolla that had a few hits (I still drove it home mechanically was fine) for $200 and it had couple after market parts. Pulled the engine, sold some parts (kept the stereo and speakers) and gave the rest away and it payed for itself and then some. Plus if you do get it from a car/wrecking yard you can get all the random little pieces, fuseboxes, hardware, coolant lines, rad etc... I did my whole swap for $900 including everything A-Z, I have a thread on it here somewhere further down.
If I wasn't limited by budget I would've gone 4age, 3sgte or most preferably 1zzfe (aluminum block an newest)
The 4age is definitely a great choice, you better post up a build thread

Re: 4a-ge Bay window kombi
The 4a-ge imports here are pretty pricey. A front cut 16v Bigport goes for around AUS$2500, where as a motor on its own is worth an average of $500-850.
Just looking at your picture waterbus, the sump sits really low. Has anyone cut one down? or can you buy a short sump?
I'm a bit concerned as my bay sits real low at the back.
I'm currently in the process of converting my spare wheel well up front to a radiator enclosure. This seems to be the best spot as my bus isn't a walk through design.
Just as a test I drilled some holes in the pan just above the beam and you can really feel the air pump through while i'm driving. So the plan is to V mount it, box it in and duct the air through the cabin divider and out the floor.

Re: 4a-ge Bay window kombi
The sump on mine is above the transmission lower mount so it should be out of harms way. Once the engine has been removed from the donor it's easy to work with. The bare block can be carried around like a lunch bucket. I built a cheap square engine stand about 1 foot high with wheels. The pan rail rest on the square tubing so it's stable. Just roll it under the bus and put a jack under the pan and jack it up to mate with the trans.
Everyone wants to put the radiator up front or under the bus. I decided to put it on the driver side in the back. I used a Jeep radiator 11" x 31". I got an extra set of louvers from the junkyard and cut the originals out, flipped them inside out and laid them on the side for better flow. Two fans and done.

Re: 4a-ge Bay window kombi
I picked up a very clean 4age 16v 100kw motor yesterday for AUS$350.
Does anyone has a diagram/schematic showing the path for the cooling system? This motor has a remote thermostat.

From the bottom of the radiator it goes to the thermostat then into the back of the water pump. Waterpump discharge goes to the top of the radiator. At the back of the engine is a water connection for the heater and there are also connections for the cold start injector. If you look at several of my puctures above you can get the idea of water flow. Drove me nuts too.

Re: 4a-ge Bay window kombi
I found some time work on the Bus over Christmas. I removed the t4 and fuel tank and mounted the 4age just to see how everthing looks. So far so good.
I've decided to run this motor on a set of twin 40mm dels's laying around, so this should make the install pretty speedy as I dont need the ECU and wiring loom. There seems to be a pretty big trend amongst the drift scene to convert these engines to carb'd with good results.
I'm not sure wheather to run the 1800 gear box(in car already) or go back to the 1600 3rib with this engine. When I used to play around with hondas I found that low ratio and revs works alot better and is easier on the motor. Any thoughts?
I'l get some pictures up shortly.

Re: 4a-ge Bay window kombi
That should be a nice conversion, I did the same 4age ser3 conversion into a bug years ago. Next time I'd rather go for the 3sgte ser3 engine... way stronger and very reliable.

Sweet BUG!
That would have been a hoot with the 4age!
Does anyone make an adapter to suit the 3sGTE?
