Re: 65' Bug k20 GT4088R turbo, DYNO UPDATE!!
NICE!
So what did it make on its second trip to the dyno? I don't have audio on this computer, so I can't hear if it was said in the video.
By the way, your car made it to the "VW abortions, homemade bastards" thread on thesamba, just like anyone else who isn't running fuchs and a narrowed beam, on a stock bug body. Welcome to the club! haha

Made 370 whp still on 91 and 13psi. Could make more but there would be no saftey margin for a bad tank of gas or too hot of intake temps. I rode it it fresh off the dyno and its fast as hell. It would seem pretty hard for it not to run in the tens. His wife demanded a cage before it his the track though so thats the next project.....

HAHA, well, it's pretty ridiculous for that car to not have a cage in it already, so that makes sense.
Looking forward to the updates!

After you welded the sump on the bottom of the gas tank did you seal the inside with anything?

No, we didn't seal the tank after welding the sump on. We were waiting to see how things worked out first before we continued throwing materials and money at it. The sump does seem to work great so I will have to pull the tank and seal it up.WickedWagens wrote:After you welded the sump on the bottom of the gas tank did you seal the inside with anything?

Thanks for the info. That seems like the easiest way to add multiple fittings and slosh protection with out doing a lot of cutting.

totally. very good idea. I'll be doing the same next time myself.
...In fact, that might be a great way of losing some weight from the back of my car.

Hello Mr.Capsoval
After test the k20 with the VW trans, how it works? wich is the higher speed the car can go with a low engine rpm's. What is your final opinion about this combo.
I have a project car and I'm making a little research.
Very nice and interesting project. Thank you very much for your time.

Amazing project. Well done seriously. I've got a 72 super with subaru 2L turbo, not tuned yet but it hauls the mail (not quite like yours will though).
Two questions:
-What tranny are you using?
-The fuel sump, I'm very interested in how well this works. The super beetle stock tank/location doesn't lend itself well to this type of sump, but if it works well, I'd very much consider doing something like this as right now I have two big fuel pumps, a surge tank and more fuel line than I care to mention sitting right at the front of the car (crumple zone!). also what would you seal it with?
Thanks
MIke

The VW tranny seems to be working out fine. The only problem turns out to be the gear ratios I went with. They were great for my aircooled motor, but are spaced a little to far apart for the very large turbo I chose for this motor. As for the speed at low rpms, If you mean cruzining speed at 65mph the car is reving to 2700rpm. As for high speed the car will do 120+ in 3rd gear, havent tried 4th gear yet.
I love this combo, the only thing I would have done differently was used a GT35R instead of the GT40R, for a faster spool time.

The tranny is a 75' single side cover "dogleg" or "zigzag" case with Weddle gears and a quaife diff. The fuel sump seems to work great. The car pulls really high forward g's in second and I have had any fuel issues yet. I had a surge tank in the crumple zone like you before this swap, but since we put the radiator up front we had to come up with something else instead. As for the sealing, There is a sealer made just for gas tanks that pours in like paint and you just slosh it around. Its fuel resistant and stops rust from forming so the tank can last a long time. It also helps fill in pin holes if there are any.Eatoniashoprat wrote:Amazing project. Well done seriously. POR15 is the stuff he's talking about. I put one through mine when I did it. It was recommended to me by a mate that makes tanks for custom bikes. Really good stuff it is.
