Hello everyone, I have a 1915cc in my sand rail and the starter seems to be too tight against flywheel for some reason, sounds like starter is binding up, it has had this problem since I bought it, I recently rebuilt it with chromoly 8 Dowell crank and flywheel, kind of stumped, no one has been able to help or point me in the right direction, any advice would be great thanks.

Most common issue that will cause that symptom is the starter bushing in the transmission bell housing being worn, the wrong one (6/12v differ) or simply completely missing.

A new starter is supposed to be installed with a new bushing.
That never actually happens of course.

A VW automatic starter (type3, type1 w/autostick, busses with automatics etc) is self supporting and doesn't need the bushing.

All normal manual trans starters for ACVWs need the bushing to support the output shaft.

The difference looking at it is the manual starter will have a round ~11mm shaft stocking out the end to go in the bushing.
The self supporting starters have no shaft past the gear.
