where can i buy the oil deflector? 1965 and later

Post by thaddeus »

hi. Im new to the site trying to figure it all out. Can anyone tell me how to find the oil deflector item # 13 in the swing axle blow up 1965 and later models. I bought the seal kit part # 311598051 it comes with a washer, but not the oil deflector. any help finding this would be great. Thanks

Callout number isn't of much use without the diagram it pertains to.

Which part is it on this diagram? http://vicsvw.tripod.com/SwingAxleParts.htm

If it's this part you're after: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1729551
...that was used until the inception of the later-style drums (the ones with a "5-spoke" design in the center of the casting, #25 in that diagram, which do not have the hole for the slinger tube). The early-style drums had a smooth center, a hole for the slinger's retaining tab and of course the exit hole. Instead of flinging any seepage out to the periphery of the drum, the later setup uses a bearing cover with an exit hole which routes it out to the inside through a hole in the backing plate.

`58-`65 drum: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1261401

`66/`67 drum: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1795421

The `66/`67 drum can be retrofitted to `58-`65 cars, but it doesn't accept the slinger (unless you drill a couple of holes in it - yecch) so to do a proper job you have to update the bearing covers to `66 and drill the pass-through hole in your backing plate. `67 & `68 covers are unique, each with a different depth recess for the bearing corresponding to their respective axle tubes, so ONLY `66 covers work for this update to a "short-axle" `58-`65 car.

That's included in the 311 598 051 kit...or should I say a rather poor reproduction if it is. Better IMO to use the used OEM part than the P.O.S. that comes in the seal kit.
