I've got my dad's MIG Welder, so I could teach myself. I may work on that over Christmas Break. Few things in my head I'd like to build for practice.Chip Birks wrote:Tell me about it, full time school, work, and spouse...its definitely hard to find the time to do it. I am lucky enough to have access to welders and plenty of steel, so i have been able to get a bit of a grasp on it. I'm not very good, but I can get by at this point. Do you have access to any equipment?Qurtys Lyn wrote:However, being a full time student (Computer Science major, Electronic Engineering minor), working part time, and trying to find time to sleep does not leave a lot of time to learn to weld. I'm thinking over the summer at the DATC, I'll start on their welding courses.

Got the bottom of the battery panel welded yesterday, now that it finally stopped raining. Hopefully the weather will hold of for a while.

My whole pan is welded up! Too bad it's raining today, and probably snowing later.
Hopefully, I'll get some good days later in the week, and I can rust seal the whole thing, and then stick it in storage until I get my body done. Pics will come once it's not raining.

Yeah, I'm just horrible at updating this thing.
It has a new heater channel on the passenger side now.

Re: Project Oddball - A Build Saga
I realize it's been a while since this has been updated, but it's sat for a while (college got in the way).
Anyway, on to the pictures!
No more stupid Quarter panel! The new one needs a lot less work (it's actually fixable, unlike the original). It's ready to weld in, but there are a few holes we have to fix first before we weld it in. You can see the holes in the last picture, just above the fender well.
Also, we discovered, that while my car originally was light blue, and then painted dark blue, the donor car was dark blue and then painted light blue. The paint lines line up, so they were both painted with the windows in.

Looking good. That is a big bite to chew and swallow doing the whole quarter like that. I'm getting pretty tired of body work on my own car.

I don't like body work. Mechanical, Electrical I can do easily enough. Body work is a pain.Steve Arndt wrote:Looking good. That is a big bite to chew and swallow doing the whole quarter like that. I'm getting pretty tired of body work on my own car.

Looks awesome guys! I too hate body work but at some point might have to replace a quarter panel also.

Steve, This car took a good side hit when it lived in Boise. That quarter had almost a inch of bondo on it.(look at page 1) If the B pillar wasn't damaged I would not have taken the whole qtr out. As you can see, we have also replaced the rocker/heater channel. Next will be the front qtr and A pillar, the dash on the right side is also buckled, but not as bad as yours was.

Re: Project Oddball - A Build Saga
Spent some more time working on this car on Saturday, the right rear quarter in now welded in. Just need to fix the rust at the bottom rear, I have a new piece of tin to fix it, just thought it would be easier to do once the qtr was on the car.
and there were 4, 1/2" holes at the back that I had to fill. I did these first and ground the welds down already.

Cut the rust spot out last night after work
and started fitting the replacement piece.(no pic) Still have some trimming to do on it, then I can get it welded in.
