Need help with diagnosis!!
I was driving home in very bad traffic on Friday and something bad seems to have happened to my engine. I have 1600 DP with dual 34 webers and dual quiet pack exhaust. After nearly 1 hour of mostly first gear driving the car started idling very rough and felt like it lost power significantly. Once clear of traffic the engine would not accelerate and seemed to be bogging through all the gears. I got it home and had a look at all the obvious stuff(timing, points, plugs etc) Drving to work today the car has more power but there was some backfiring when acceerating. This seemed to come and go even after the car warmed up. I am still new to the dual 34 webers so any suggestions on those would be helpful. What could have happened while sitting in traffic to cause these problems? Thanks for any ideasand sorry for the long post.

I have been having a problem with Bosch condensers for the 009 only lasting a few months, then I get the same problems you describe. My time in traffic is not as long as yours, but I have found a definate correlation between sitting in traffic and the ongevity of my condensers. Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,
I have checked for vacuum leaks. The valves were adjusted about 500 miles ago. I believe the backfiring is through the carbs. Small popping under acceleration. I'll try replacing the condensor. I haven't checked the carbs yet other than a quick visual check. Thanks for the ideas.

i have the same carburetors and had the same problem as u.if u are still running the stock jetting in those carburetors they will run like crap.mine came with 52 idle jets and 130 main jets.aircooled.net suggested i use 60 idle jets and 140 main jets as soon as i put these in and adjusted the carb its been running perfect.also i did away with my points and bought the magfire electronic ignition it runs very smooth and i never have to adjust points ever again.i hope this was helpful.

Try synching the carbs to make sure that they arent out of sync.

Check fuel pump volume and pressure. You may have a weak pump, clogged fuel filter, or the little screen that screws into the bottom of the gas tank may be plugged up (very common).

Did you check valves?
Does temperature of the engine have anything to do with it?
Have you checked for vacuum leaks and checked your idle jets to make sure they are not plugged?
Does it backfire throught the carbs or the exhaust? Is it a little pop or a KAPOW!?

Did you check the vacume balance hose that runs from manifold to manifold mine broke one time and pinched another time just a thought & get a ignitor for that 009 also how old are the carbs mine I got at a local swap meet and were in sad shape the throttle shafts were and still are shot but with some o rings behind the dust caps on the throttle shafts the vacume leaks went away and they run great on my mild 1776

Heres an update!
Driving home yesterday and hit bad traffic again. Temp was about 88 outside. Car started to act up while idling in traffic. Popping through the carbs, no power, bogging down while accelerating. Once I got clear of traffic and started travelling at intersate speed things gradually got better. I thought this was strange. Drove to work today (no traffic problems) and maintained 65 mph the whole way. No problems at all. Worked perfectly.
Does this sound like there is an issue with the points, plug wires, condensor etc, etc.
The carbs are synced, the balance tube is ok. Could be plugged jets I haven't pulled them apart yet.
Thanks for all the responses.

check to find out what size jets u are running -they could be causing it to run too lean i had to buy new jets for mine the original jets were way off.i was experiencing the same as what u describe it would run ok at 65 but take off and idle they didnt run good.if your unsure email aircooled.net and talk to john connely he knows all about these carbs i went with his recomendations for larger jets and sure enough they run smooth and has power throughout rpm range .hope this helps

Your idle jets may be either too small or plugged. Or you may have an intake leak.
