I see a lot of posts about high displacement Type IV motor conversions. Can't a Type displace the same without the conversion woes?

Jake,

All sounds good, for a daily driver powerplant. But what about the added weight of a T4 and the need for multiple trans and engine mounts to carry said mill in a T1 carcus? It was also explained by you that the T4 will never drive like a T1 as far as climbing up the R's and ripping a fast time at the track.

A 2270cc T4 (in a hypothetical situation)with some serious mods fitted to a Beetle with selected ratios and tires suited for drag, only runs a 13.7 or higher. A T1 of similar nature and smaller cc's, like a 1776cc will boast a 12 sec. pass and still drive home like the T4. Of course this is a very broad example.

Torque is fun, but I like when my T1 doesn't "always" spin and it just gets up and eats who ever tried! I also like the fact that I can fit my motor like intended with no need for added gussets etc. All the parts in my motor are also ready on a shelf at any VW supplier and I can build and rebuild my motor four times before I get close to the cost. (Of course it won't a rebuild till after 200,000+.)

No Flame intended, just figureing this out.

how would you go about installing that extra bracing on an IRS type3? i am getting a type3 that i would eventually like to drop a 2270 into. and ive herd that the berg intermediate trans mount only works on swingaxle cars?

I'll never make the swap and sacrafice the fun and Performance that the T1 supplies.

Second gear starts are NO Problem for my car and the mileage is unkown, I do believe I lost some when I added the Holley 650DP.

Jake, are you going to Maple Grove? I'd like to see this car and put the Mythes to sleep.

No Flames here.

There are T4 bugs in Germany that do very low 12s on street tires and drive the car to go shopping the day after.
You need about 20 more hp in a T4 to compare it to a T1 I guess but there are T4s out there that produce 230hp and the number will increase as soon as the problem with the T4 heads is solved with a new design that a German (French) tuner has in the works and testing right now. The estimated hp with those heads is a 100hp per 1 liter displacement.

They are streetable and they will stay cool.
Some facts are 40% stronger than stock T4 heads (like 993 heads) and 38% more cooling surface. The cooling fins are a little thicker though because they go deeper than the stock ones and therefore to eliminate that they break off to quickly. Valve size goes up to 50x42 with all stock T4 parts (rockers, push rod tubes) and they have a T1 design for the exhaust.

That is what the tuner told me.

There are not that many 12 sec 1776 type 1s. I've never seen one. In fact, you would be hard pressed to get into the 13s without a close ratio box, or a Berg 5 speed.

Even if you did get it in the 12s, it would be so peaky, that it wouldn't be much fun to drive.

With the improvements toward the T4 top end, I would then consider a "thought" of it's use. If the 27lbs. is actual (hard to believe, seeing how I lift my T1 w/ carbs no problem, but the T4 long block seems alot heavier!)

I had recently sold my 74 2.0 for squat to a local VW addict. I guess I'll never see the difference, stock 2.0 vs. stock 1600, or even my 1776cc. I need to get a ride in a "plagued" T4 converted Bug.

Too bad it's "too far" to drive your Beast to Maple Grove. We're driving our forced induction T1's from the Mass./ CT. Border!
According to one young man in Idaho, that's gonna KILL our T1 mills. LOL
