Kitchen Sink Strainer Oil Screen

Post by risk »

Built an oil pickup screen out of a kitchen sink strainer!

I have an old APRM case, so my oil pickup is a little different than stock. Sump is Scat 1.5 qt.

Started with a cheap stainless steel sink strainer.

Flattened out the edges, drilled some holes and cut out for my oil pickup.

Fits great, I just hope it doesn't leak! I used a thick gasket on each side, and a thin coat of sealant on both sides of the gaskets.

Nice!
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

There are lots of different ones out there, I just got lucky on the size and mesh etc.

Hi Risk!

Love it. Turn those screens upside down and they make great velocity stack screens. We use them on our Kads and the smaller ones fit Weber stacks.

FJ,
Have you tried running those hump up vs hump down, to see if the interaction with the fuel standoff changed anything?

Why wouldn't the stock screen work?

The ARPM case has the pickup cast into it.. So I tapped the pickup hole for pipe threads and used a pipe nipple for my sump extension. The stock screen would not fit the larger diameter pickup tube.

Tapping it then inserting a fitting would reduce the flow area by about half of the original, right?

Nope.. i did my homework beforehand. I had to drill the pickup larger for the 1/2" pipe tap. The id of the pipe nipple is around .635" and the id of the inlet hole in the case at the pump is around .625" or 5/8.

How did you figure it reduced by half?

I figured the ID of the fitting that would screw into the tube would be reduced compared to the tube original ID (obvious). Hence reducing diameter some, and area a bunch. Carry on, just making sure you had this worked out. Not knocking your work.
I wish I had an ARPM case. I have the matching ARPM 2 stage OG pump :)

Hacking on an original ARPM case really made my stomach drop.. but it was either that or weld an extension on.
