Diameter, by a bunch, and axle spline size. The early "½-ton" small-spline drums (mid`55-`63, 211 501 615A) are 230mm.
`63½ "¾-ton" drums (211 501 615D) still have the small splines and 36mm axle nut, but the diameter went up to 250mm.
`64-`67 "1-ton" (211 501 615E) have the large splines/46mm nut and are also 250mm.

Can you tell where your drum is rubbing? If it's just at the perimeter and the backing plate lip isn't bent, you might need to take the drum to a lathe and trim its lip slightly for clearance - I've encountered that problem occasionally with replacement drums.

Irrelevant for you but this is as good a place as any to insert this trivia for the benefit of future searchers:
Early `68 IRS had a rare drum, 211 501 615F - the backing plate is also different, and the drums are unavailable so anyone needing these may as well convert to the late`68-`70 brakes and 211 501 615G drums. Even that's a hassle since the bolt/dowel pin arrangement for the backingplate is different on the early `68 diagonal arms, but there's not really any choice.
