Door Stickers and Full Restorations

Post by Bonemaro » Fri Aug 01, 2014 10:17 pm

Y'all know them door stickers we go?

During a full restoration, I know some would like to keep them. I'm sure the best/worst way would be to mask them off, but I'm probably going to be going with a color change and masking comes with a whole laundry list of PITA situations with less-than-ideal results.

I'm actually thinking of taking some nice high res shots of them, cleaning/proportioning them up in Photoshop and having new stickers made up to replace the factory stickers. Also the stickers already shows some age is meh...

Any thoughts on that route? Any other ideas?

For legal reasons I would make every effort to preserve the one with the VIN.
The other with tire pressure etc IIRC is available, at least for T1s.

U could soak or steam the sticker and find a way to get the adhesive to release?

The vin sticker appears to be of the security type that break apart when you try to take it off.

I mocked up a new decal in Photoshop. I figure I could laser print it on a transparency, back paint the letters silverish and leave the dot matrix clear. After I shoot the base on the car, I can attached the transparency to the door and clear over the whole thing. The clear matrix should give the illusion of it being punched.

Here's the laser on transparency version. Looks good to me. I can paint in the white on the backside and leave the numbers clear to simulate a punch.

This.

I'm not sure what the point of a full restoration is if the colour will be changed. That is usually a penalty in a judged class. In a judged class the reproduction sticker won't fool anyone for long. I don't get it.

Yes, I plan on showing it, but like my other cars, I couldn't give a crap what a judge thinks. I show for my own enjoyment and the camaraderie of friends. Also, I do local shows, nothing overly serious or hoity-toity.

To be honest, I primarily want to keep the sticker due to it's date. This car was left to me by my grandfather and that date has special meaning to me.

Looks like you are missing the 0 on the end of the #1432.
The original pic shows #14320.
Just thought I would point that out in case it matters.

That is an excellent reason. I just couldn't see why you would reproduce a perfectly good OEM sticker. If anyone notices it you have a great back story. Makes perfect sense now. ;-)

Cheers,

Or for poops and giggles, I could do this... although I'd have to have someone in Germany check the verbiage.
