Ok...some things to think about. The old volks home has great specs. So I took a llok at most of the vacuum advances in their listing.

The 1970-1972 411 with D-Jet and manual tranny:

Can #: 07 085
Advance: 11-14*
Retard: 8-12*
Centrifugal: 8-10* at 1500. If memory serves...it actually starts centrifugal advance around 11-1200 rpm.

The 1970-1972 411 with D-Jet and automatic tranny:

Can #: 07 042
Advance: 11-13*
Retard: none listed
Centrifugal: 8-15* at 1500. If memory serves...it actually starts centrifugal advance around 11-1200 rpm.

If you just need advance...the 07 042 can above will work fine with the manual 411 also.

1973 412 with D-jet:

Can #: 07 109 and 07 140
Advance: not listed
Retard: none listed
Centrifugal: not listed

But I can tell you that the requirment for the 1973 412 is identical to the 411 settings from above

1974 412 with L-jet 1800
These are functionally similar to the "bus" cans. They are missing a slight amount of vaccum advance. Typically D-jet needs about 10-11* initial vacuum advance.....and betwen 8 and 15* centrifugal in the mid-range rpms 1500+. The 412 with L-jet has slightly less but ...that won't matter anyway because that is in your distributor...not the can. So...the L-jet can will work on your 411.

Note: the key is that the L-jet system delivers less vacuum than D-jet...notice below that there is a vacuum listing for L-jet vacuum advance. The spring is not as strong in the L-jet cans

Can #: 07 060
Advance: 8.5-11* @ 7.9" of vaccum
Retard: none listed....but I can assure you that most used a vacuum advance.
Centrifugal: not listed

So: you can use these cans so far with almost no issues:

07 085
07 042
07 109
07 140
07 060 ( the most risk but they can be used)

Other cans that have the same amount of initial vacuum advance....but no retard and slightly different vacuum sensitivity:

T-3, 1969,1970-71

Can: 07-022
Advance: 8-12*
Centrifugal kicks in at 1500....so I'm betting that looking in Bentley will tell you that vaccum kicks in around the same rpm range...about 1100-1200 rpm. Being D-jet it should have about the same vaccum as type 4...maybe slightly less.

T-3 1972/1973 manual/auto

Can: 07 100
Advance: 8-12 degrees
retard: 9-10 degrees
Centrifugal:...this kicks in 11-16* by 1800...The can may have slightly higher vacuum signature than stock 411/412....but this can will work

The 07 052 from the 1973 fuel injected type 3 may also fit and may work but there is not enough info to say it is close enough.

So.....these ar also good possibilities
07 022
07 100
07 052 (possibly)

Other ones that may work.....and I have used some of them here and there...but being L-jet and digijet...they have lower vacuum signatures are these:

1983-84 Vanagon with digijet
Can: 07 212
Advance: 12-16*....at 10.6" hg...so its vacuum is similar to a 411/412
retard: none

The 80-83 vanagon:

Can # 07 060...same as 1974 412...marginal but workable

76-78 bus 2.0

Can # 07 060...same as 1974 412...marginal but workable

Also...if you check rockauto for Porsche 914 1.7L 1971-1973....you will see that they list a vaccum advance unit part # Vc477....standard motor products (generally good parts). This is the same exact vaccum advance that the 411/412 1.7L used. Its a bit pricey...but to be expected $131.

Also in Rockauto. The single vaccum (no retard) for a 1970-1971 fuel injected type 3
bosch can # 07-022 can be had under standard motor products part # VC 457. I have used this before with decent results...but you normally have to drill and extra mounting hole or elongate one. It is $45.89
