Has anyone used this fuel pressure regulator on the aircooled VW or have they ever had any problems with it?
I am planning on upgrading it by getting the better diaphragm Quick Fuel 35-1100QFT
suitable for ethanol and Holley Spring kit 20-13 just in case.

Yes, we use the same "low pressure" regulator as you've chosen. The regulator is sold under several brand names. We'e had them branded by Holley, by Jegs, and generic. They work okay. Not fine, but okay.
Natural enemy #1 of these is E10 street pump gas if you don't drain the system after an event and let the car set for months. We only run three LeMons races a year, and this year it will be only two. allowed to dry and congeal ,the E10 pump gas gums up and the regulator and pressure gauge and it become either impossible to pass regulated fuel through the device or impossible to pass fuel at all through them.
We have saved a regulator or two by disassembling them and forcing the internal check ball to break loose. However, if you manage to bend the check ball socket, you are buying a new regulator.
Keep in mind pressure setting is a slow, deliberate act turning and returning a fine thread set screw. Static pressure (full float bowl) reads high, moving or flowing gas it is low. Go 1.5psi for Solex Kadrons and 3.5 for Webers.
