Hi All,
Just joined this forum and looking forward to learning a lot. I live outside Austin Texas, and am in the process of looking for baja bug for a general use, daily driver. My son is also interested in one for his first car, so we'll be getting some kind of project car for him to learn on.
Thanks...Jeff

Welcome Jeff... and son; in the off-road forum you might get some ideas as well as other areas... you never know where information pops up at.

Jeff,
Welcome to STF!
Fog's right. Check the OR forum, for sure. As you narrow your project goals down a little, you will begin to find more specific info in the other forums. Just start reading and you'll get some ideas.
Keep us posted on progress.

Jeff, general use does that include light off-road or just around town stuff. For around town stuff almost anything can be used unless you get the urge to go farther then things can change quickly. Basically anything thing '65 and under will have a king pin & link pin front suspension (torsion bars) with wide 5 bolt pattern with a swing axle transaxle; '60 and older have transaxle that is split down the center and isn't as strong as the later versions.eddi887 wrote:Hi All,

"66 through '68 has a ball-joint front suspension (torsion bars) and swing axle transaxle with the '68 having longer axles.
"69 and later, with the exception of a Super Beetle (SB) has a ball-joint beam and IRS transaxle.
King and link (K&L) can be modified to more travel than a Ball-joint (BJ) front beam. An IRS can be modified to more travel than a swing axle can be made to do without damage done.
Check the pan around the doors and in the rear by the battery box on the passenger side for rust... very common.
For a first time job it might be better to look at something running project and use it then fix the mistakes/weak spots beore going to the mat with an all out build (Leather needs to update this tease but for starts: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=136758).
This is a very general outline but it might give you some ideas to get started with.
