Car stalling sputtering

Post by BorisSobad »

Had my 1776 with dual Kads for 10 years 14K miles. Just started acting wonky. Started fine went a hundred yards then started to sputter and stall. Replace fuel filter and tuned up. Happened again. The exhaust is black, think I am flooding the carbs. I'm not much on carb knowledge and no one local I know. :(

I'll buy that. Too much fuel pressure is sometimes the culprit, but you didn't mention any recent fuel pump changes. You may be able to tell if it's just one carburetor by removing the aircleaners and watching for fuel overflow after the engine's run for a moment. Have a fire extinguisher available. If it won't idle, go ahead and remove the sparkplugs and compare the insulator coloration from side to side. An ignition misfire can also cause a sooty exhaust, if you don't see any obvious flooding and the plugs all look about the same you should rule out an ignition problem before tearing into the carbs. Likely suspects would be excessive dwell (points too close due to worn rubbing block) or a bad condenser or coil.
Kadrons (actually they're Solex H40/44EIS) are pretty simple to work on and can use the same float valve ("needle & seat") as a stock VW carburetor. It screws into the carb top. If the float valve hasn't come loose and the float hasn't started taking on fuel, a new float valve is probably all that's needed as a "fix".
10 years is a pretty long service life for the original Brazilian float valves, so you may want to plan on replacing both. Hopefully the carb top will come off without damaging the gasket, but you should at least know where to get one before you open it up. Another thing I'd expect to see on Kads that old would be sloppy throttle bodies - but if you've really only put 14K on them and haven't had trouble with stable idling (until this new problem came up) they're probably good enough for now, just be aware that there are several outfits offering new/rebushed throttle bodies and rebuilding services if you should need them.
Expect to pay ~$30 ea for a basic rebuild kit that contains the top, base, and throttle body gaskets, float valve, and a new accelerator pump diaphragm. I can remember when a set of Kadrons was under $200, these days they bring ~$520 up - so it's worth investing some money in them if they're a good choice for your engine. They're still the most popular setup for a mild 1775.
