before i go and buy a 210 flywheel

Post by pantswagen »

can i not just roll up some 5mm aluminium square bar, and use it as a spacer and fit the 228mm flywheel. -

more importantly, does the weight of the engine sit in the trans recess - or is it all on the 4 bolts?

I like the idea that the flywheel is forged and offers more clamping.

A birdie told me that you can take a 228 to your machinist
of choice and turn it down to work, but I don't know the *specifics*....

I will be updating my site with the information you need to use the 228. It's not impossible, but it does require some careful machining and fitting. I'll try to post it this evening.

Only *some* of the Wasser 228 flywheels are forged. None of the normal 228s are- they are all cast...

The 228 is my least favorite, especially because the pressure plate sucks and is heavy as hell.

my point is, if i have to buy for £40 a 210 flywheel
AND a new clutch £77

£117

that then still needs to be taken to the engineers for cutting for the type 1 bearing

for the 10 quid he will charge me, is it just a case of taking 5mm from the
clutch surface and pressure plate - face

is 5mm the magic number?
is the ring gear in the correct location?
ie do i still need to space the starter 5mm?
and or do i take some out of the crank shaft to flywheel surface,-or indeed can i?

do i cut the flywheel clutch face with the p/plate face 5mm and then still
space the sarter 5mm, or do i use a late starter
i remember once fitting a late bus starter in a type 1 trans, and the starter pinion stuck out 5mm( i just ground it off :D )
is that the starter i need , is its starter gear in a different location?
surely not, - i mean the ring gear position on all flywheels, must be the same?

is it just a case of getting the pressure plate in the trans by clearancing the flywheels face?
-means i wont have to buy a new clutch neither :D

if its possible, to do it without cutting the trans
i'd prefer to do that - as yet another grinding disc exploded on me today
:D
plus, i have noelastictrickery in the garage

Patience, is a virtue,
Possess it if you can,
Never found in women,
But, ...always in a man.

spose i'll just have to wait then

whats it all about machining cast flywheels being prone to exploding?
is that all go-nads?

Piledriver sent me his procedure for installing the 228. You guys can read about here. Please direct all questions towards him, as I've never done and I've never sat down to see if it works.

I just want to reiterate the 2mm cut back on the flywheel is blatently stolen from someone
on the net I haven't (yet) found again to give the proper credit.

Here's one... http://www.type4parts.com/cat_clutch.cfm

IIRC Jake said (something like) taking an additional .010 off the clutch face gives more clamping force---correct?

I personally just (carefully) clearanced the hell out of the bellhousing and added the spacer/right starter etc... But the 2mm cut should help GREATLY.

And the spacer for the starter is 1/2"...12mm.. perhaps 11 if you do the 2mm cut trick. It has to be very solid...
I carved mine from 1/2 6061T6 plate, same stuff I made the gen stand etc from.(Nextgen conversion)
Bi-metal hole saws are wonderful carving tools on aluminum/mag...

Also use a LOW SPEED CUTTER on magnesium, like a 2-3" (wood OR metal, mag is soft) inch hole saw in an electric drill, without the drill bit (break bit off if you have to) A high speed disk wil just load up/break/start fires you can't put out...

Kennedy sells a HD 228 pressure plate good to >>300ft/lb torque (supposedly) for V8-in-a-914 use.
Probably need a hydraulic MS/slave and HD TO arm...

Given the choice, I would use the 210.
I did the 228 because I HAD to.
(long story)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
