Solex H40 DEIS? on 2liter Baja?

I picked up a pair of Solex H 40 DEIS carbs at a swap meet. I showed them to a friend and he said they were a style he had not seen before. :?: :?
  • How would they work on a 2 liter with 1.8 heads & European motorwerks exhaust?

How would they work off road?

    Are type IV manifolds available?
Other alternative is the old stock carbs.

All replies appreciated.

Do they happen to look like this:

These are the carbs that I have on my relatively stock 1600. They are basically equiv. to a kadron from what I've heard

Another thing to note, they don't use the kadron air cleaners either, I had to get some cone filters from k&n to fit (35 bucks each). The base is the same style and mounting as kadron's so I would think if you can find a manifold for kadrons, you could use that. The kadron linkage from bugpack also works.

I don't know exactly what they are but I refur to them as baby Kadrons. When I have found them in compleate kits they always have 1200cc (40 HP) single port manifolds. I wouldn't try them on a 2.0 motor. New Kadron kits are available for type 4 motors. I have never seen Kadron manifolds for type 4s however you can make an adapter to the original bus Solex manifolds, as I did years ago. The biggest problem with Kads offroad is that you need to extend the vents to avoid slopping fuel down the manifolds.

I wouldn't think of these as baby kads, as big as they are. Mine came bolted up to dual port manifolds.

lorddoom, those look *very* similar to the carbs I'm running on my 1776, the one exception is that mine say "H 40/44 DEIS" on the side. There's the definate aircleaner issue, but Kadron manifolds and linkage work just fine.

The only exception I've encountered was with the Kadron rebuild kits -- the top-plate gasket blocks the passage for the accellerator pump circuit. Easy to correct with a razor knife if you pay attention (I didn't, the first time I put them back together).

I've heard a few people refer to these as "big Kadrons", for whatever it's worth..

They look exactly like that, Solex Brosol Industria Brazil. How appropriate that the pictures would be on a Ford site, as I picked them up at the Tacoma Model T Ford Club swap meet.

I planned on making my own linkage; this and the tube isn't a problem - I have a hardware store full of fittings and tubing. They came with cylindrical K&N's, which are the same diameter as the stock carbs.

Greg DRBO, Are you sure these are the same carbs you are thinking of :?: I may have use of a set of those 40HP manifolds you mentioned.

Why would you not use them on a 2Liter? I do have a Progressive & manifold lying around (for use in a later CIS conversion); I know you will not allow that! :x

Hehe, they are on a ford site cause my other car is a ford. It just a defunct address for a club I was trying to help get started, that didn't really work out. Now I just use it for personal space :)

If they are baby Kads I would not use them because I think their ability to supply enough fuel for 2.0 liters would be suspect at best. The Photos and my memory may not be matching up correctly, but they do look simular to what I recall baby Kads looking like. I ran Kadrons on a bus with stock Solex manifolds and adapters to the carbs and they were far superior to the progressive Webber they replaced. The Progressive would flood on every right turn.

Unless Solex told Brosol to copy a baby Kadron, I should be fine. Also note that the 1.8 heads and EMW exhaust are the only performance mods, so no excessive fuel requirements should be on them. Are baby Kadrons as big as the stock carbs? These things are more like Bugsprays or Rochester 2GC in size.

The babys are smaller than regular Kadrons. They have much the same appearance as those in the pics. BTW Brosol is the Brazillian/Bro maker of Solex/Sol carbs and Kadron is the company that kits them for VW applications kind of like Edelbrock/Holley relationship. All Kadron kits use Brosol carbs of various sizes. If you have Solex carbs they would be German. And therefor unlikly to be from a Kadron kit, they should quite likly work with Kadron manifolds and possibly even the linkage. Where their throat size is 40 they should provide enough fuel for your motor.
