Type 4 camshaft CB 2202

Post by Shadyabinader »

I have a type 4 engine cv code with stock heads (squared exhaust ports)
I did rebuild it and installed cb 2202 cam in it with 278°duration 0.41''lift and carburator 38/38 DGES EMPI
The theoretical compretion was 8.2
All other parts are stock with stock muflers
I did run the engine and did not felt any power and also i did measure the pressure 105 psi
What was wrong can someone help?
Is the compression 8.2 good to have power ?

Welcome to the STF!

With a larger cam, you will need higher static compression to have the "same" dynamic compression as stock.

...Still, what you have should run reasonably, what deck height did you build with?
If it has head gaskets, they should go away, but you needs at least 1mm of deck space at TDC.
This should be done with cylinder base metal gaskets/spacers.

I don't know why the gasket makers still include head gaskets, VW put out a TSB 40 years ago to remove them.

Where are you located?
There may be another forum member local to you who can lend a hand.

Hello
My location is Beirut Lebanon
My deck hight is 0.5 mm
No head gasket and no cylinder to case gasket too in order to increase the compression
Thank you allot for your help

.5mm/.020 is much tighter than usually recommended, although from experience it will not grow any carbon in that tight a squish area.

With the cam you have a much higher static compression ratio is called for, usually achieved with flat top 96mm pistons.

With std bus 55cc chambers, 12cc pistons and that deck height I would expect closer to 7.9:1 CR, your best options are swap the cam or swap the pistons/cylinders.

if i keep the dished 94 dished pistons and 1 mm the deck height and do machine work for the heads to obtain 8.0 compression
does it work if i don't want to change any of the cam or pistons?
it is very hard to get parts here and it cost triple parts
or if you know any idea to do and less cost
for example my friend did install toyota 4 runner 95 mm flat pistons in his type 4 instead of the dished

You don't want to flycut the heads for compression, the stock deck is too thin to begin with.
Flattop 96s are easiest, just make absolutely sure the jugs are stock length before they are shipped.
Fixing "too long" AA jugs locally can cost more than the jugs.

There are Ford pistons that are about right pin/deck height etc for 96mm.
Toyota pistons he used may work out great.

Try to find a used set of German jugs and bore those, save the good 94mm bus set for a ~stock engine or with a web 73 cam.

Looking up those Toyota pistons they have huge dishes and short (1.28"/32,5mm) compression heights, they'd probably be great on a stroker motor, and 94mm is std bore size. Googled toyota 1GRFE piston specs (4L V6)

The Ford pistons would work @ 96mm Cologne V6 IIRC, Capris etc.

OooOooOoo the 1GRFE has 2.165 rod journals maybe decent rod bearings?

Can you post up the cam card data for that cam?
It seems like it should be able to run sorta OK, just not near optimal.

It came with cam card for setting it up, checking installation.
Intake opens at ?
Closes at ?
Exhaust , lobe center, duration at .050" lift etc...

CB doesn't have it on their website, I didn't want to guess.

Intake opens 35 before tdc
Exhaust close 31 after tdc
Exhaust opens 69 before bdc
Intake close 65 afyer bdc
Valve lift 413
Degree of duration 280
Does this cam work on standard dished 94 mm pistons with compression ratio 8 ? And all stock heads ?

You have a mismatched combo.
To make it "work" it wants ~at least 9:1 CR, ideally bigger valves & ported with HD springs and a decent exhaust.
Its a ~higher RPM performance cam in a stock bus motor (lowest flow heads, good for low RPM tq)

A Web 73 or equivalent would be appropriate for the existing CR and heads (224 degrees at .050") and even it would work better with ~another half a point of compression (~8.5:1)

What vehicle is this in?
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
