Supervee

A friend has been given a Supervee to go through before it is used in circuit racing here in Australia by the new owner , it's Zink Z11 . He doesn't have much in the way of info on it , the owner has tried to email the last engine builder in the States but hasn't had any replies . All we know is it's now a 2lt type 4 with supposedly 170hp.

If you google the Zink Z11 it's the yellow #12 one , very nice looking car . Something John noticed straight away is the rockers (genuine) look like they have a higher ratio than other rockers he's seen with 8mm adjusters , also the heads look a little different , still bus plug angle and 4 bolt manifolds but seem to have more meat around the intake port area for larger ports . anyone have any info on what VW produced for the Supervee engines . we already know about the special bore size to bring the displacement back to 1600cc .

Are they VW castings or aftermarket? Could be replacement heads are now approved, I found one FSV rule book that says 44x38mm valves are permitted.
When the transition was made to waterpumper engines in Super Vee (VW was more interested in promoting the new Rabbits than the obsolescent aircooled cars) both types were limited to 1600cc but at first they mandated restrictor plates for the watercooleds, with it known that they'd be coming off in a couple seasons so the guys running aircooleds could remain competitive as they used up their stuff and built new H20 motors.
Nowadays I understand that FSV is allowing 2000cc in the aircooleds and 1600cc in the watercooleds (or perhaps that's just some organizations - I don't follow it anymore.)

This rulebook classifies the Z11 as a "series one" (pre-wing) car:

Thanks Marc,I'll pass on the rule book . I'm not sure on the heads ,I'll ask if there are any part numbers . Heres a pic of the intake manifold ,it has a adaptor for IDF/Dels instead of the Solex. .

With the rockers the cup looks like it is lot closer to the rocker shaft . they haven't checked the ratio yet set up on the engine .

Cool manifolds, but if your local rules will allow IDFs/DRLAs on adapters, will they also accept aftermarket manifolds? Those only cost ~US$75/pr, seems like the OEM 40P11 manifolds and adapters could bring a lot more than that from some niche-market buyers. http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=67967

Not being a Type IV aficionado I can't say, but I agree those rocker cups sure do look closer to the shaft than any I can remember seeing.

The current owner has got in contact with a previous owner and thinks the engine may have been overhauled by FAT just before it got shipped to Australia ,so he's going to contact them . The manifolds are being replaced with a new set , gets rid of the adaptor , less risk of leaks .
We don't have FSV here so the car will race under the Formula Libre ,which is just class for odd ball cars that don't really fit anywhere.

The Super Vee motor I have, has 1.7 Type lV VW heads with 87.5mm p/c (which are pop ups with valve reliefs in the pop ups) to get the engine size under 1600 cc. And a cam with a 6,800 RPM limit, other than the cam which may be a Schleicher, everything else are factory VW parts . From what I was told, these motors were built by Oettinger for VW.

Welcome back Richard . it's getting close to start up ,new match ported manifolds ,CSP centre pull linkage , who ever worked on it last time used standard phenolic gaskets , and the 44 IDF's were sitting on 40mm adaptors on 40mm soles manifolds . it will get run on a dyne in the next few weeks . all the brakes have been overhauled as well . Richard any idea if VW produced different rockers for the Super Vees ?

The rockers I have on my motor are just std 1.7 rockers. Your picture, looks to have the cup centered in the rocker, not closer to the pivot point as you suggest. Try and find a 1.7 rocker from another motor and compare them.
