Type 4 Dimensions In A Ford Hot Rod

Hello all, first time poster here. Joe Cali suggested that I join, so everyone can blame him. Now let's cut the chitchat and get to business.

I like Frankenstein customs. Not just bitsa projects, but also the stuff that makes traditionalists and purists cringe. So I'm putting an ACVW in a '27 Ford hot rod, mounted IN FRONT and mated to a Quaife 6 spd sequential transmission for rear wheel drive. I think I quite prefer the Type 4 to the Type 1.

Anyone happen to know:

1) The overall width of a Type 4 (upright cooling or longblock, not pancake).

2) The distance in inches or cm between Type 4 exhaust ports (I want to keep the headers and exhaust inside the frame rails).

Oddly the one dimension that is smaller than a type-1 is width (valve cover bail to valve cover bail) but not by much. For a beetle engine 29-30” is typical.

I would guess that the exhaust ports are around 21” center to center

My Type 4 with alloy valve covers is around 30" and as stated allow 23" for your exhaust ports . I have always thought it would be fun to turn up to a Subaru event with a STi ,powered by a high HP Type 4 with a big pair of IDA's poking out the bonnet .

Just over 23 inches from the outside of the parallel pipes , the outwards swinging pipe is wider to keep the lengths the same but you would be running the pipes back the other way . An interesting project,

Ok serious, when i asked you what you were putting it in you did not tell me. Now I see your creation and love it.

Strange I have been recently searching for front engined vw conversions and hear you are.

I saw one a few years ago and it looked like the way the Morgan 3 wheeler had it's engine way up front, very airplane like.

What i want to see is how you get the power to the rear wheels, Bug tranny??? Your shifter linkage must be interesting.

Thanks, Joe! I hope my front engine project inspires you. I'm putting a VW beam-style front end on it, too, just like in the photo. So at this point does this mean the hot rod is a '27 Ford or a Volksrod?

The transmission will be a Quaife 6 spd sequential transmission. The shift lever will be positioned just above my knees and just below my crotch, with the steering wheel being an airplane-style half moon yolk to allow me to comfortably grab between my legs while keeping one hand free for steering.

I had to do a google search on == Quaife 6 spd sequential transmission. Very cool looking tranny. Just have mate the tranny and flywheel up. The drive shaft should not be a problem.

A bus bell housing would be trivial to adapt... Cheap too.
