Re: End play approximation
the shims don't go in between the flywheel and crank, they go around the crank between the flywheel and bearing

Re: End play approximation
Ahhhhh thank you! Now I get it. I don't have any shins on hand so I didn't understand how the fit. I'll order them now.

Re: End play approximation
There is a gap betwen the crank thrust and flywheel thrust surfaces you can easily measure if its standing on a workbench bolted together, with no bearings/shims.(with the right tools)
The bearing and the shims fill that gap, minus a little bit of oil clearance.
BTW, That's the other way to figure out the required shims.
No case needed.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: End play approximation
Wow thanks. That would be clever and makes sense now. I appreciate everyone's input. I think it's really cleared up the patchwork of threads on endplay. VERY helpful for the beginner like me.
